Shun, decorate urself by (imbibe) the way of righteous.

We'll b thrown in hell and he(pbuh) will feel sad


''KASHEERI PHEURUS ANDIH ANDIH,
KANSI KORUM NE BRANDIH TRAAV.
JANDAS YELLIH KORUM PAIWANDIH,
SAARVI WONUM PHANDIH AAV''


Translation:
Went to every corner of kashmir,
But no one gave me the alms(no one paid attention).
And when I stitched(grafted) my torn clothes,
All said that an imposter has come]






Translation :
Some have graves beautiful like flowers
While some have graves dark like hell
Some people were lifted by you O Allah
Some were misguided by one instance


Some people's sod is like a flower garden,
Some people's sod is like dark pit.
Some laid down their life in Your path, O Allah,
And some went astray just by a single abberation


 
Translation:
O Baba Nasr(disciple of Shiekh(ra)), going to forests was a big fault,
I (earlier) thought it as a great form of prayer.
See, it was a scandalous act,
We are supposed to search for only one word

The (perverted) priest is happy with gifts and feasts,
The (Perverted) teachers were lost in gains and honey.
The (perverted) Sufis wore cloak and became lazy,
(All of these) eat excessive dishes at dinner.
Not even one out of them acquired knowledge (but) kept making followers cult,
None of them was able to control the self(baser one)




O servant of Allah, u are engrossed in Worldly desires,
You have made youself (like) a shopkeeper.
Your 'Self' is making ur roam all day,
And it has fitted yoke in you.
The Self is making u to grab faeces(unlawful things),
You haven't really got an iota of understanding

"By bowing down, thou shalt not become a Rishi; the pounder in the rice-
mill did not ever raise up its head."
"By entering a cave, God cannot be attained: the mongoose and the rat
seldom come out of their holes".
 "By bathing, the mind will not be cleansed: The fish and the otter never
ascend the bank."
"If God was just pleased by fasting, the indigent rarely cook food in pots."

One day my life will be fighting the death,
Many friends and brothers will surround my dead body.
Brothers together will give me a funeral bathe,
And many more will wail and cry over my death.
My wet body will be drapped in cloth(Kafan),
Only good and bad deeds will accompany me

My Ego is (like) elephant,
It did many tricks(to overpower/kill me).
One out of a thousand bloomed(i.e., was saved),
Otherwise it trampled upon everyone

O self, when hell will be ignited,
There u will say why did ever was I born!
My own sins will doom me there,
There u will say why did ever was I born!
That fire will is enough to turn mountains and hills into ash,
The bad people will be dragged by beard.
The disobedient will have nothing except ruing,
There u will say why did ever was I born!



Telling the truth makes u tremble like a leaf;
Telling a lie makes u feel boasted.
Bypassing Mohammad(pbuh) and embracing Satan,
God gave u and are u trying to hide things from God

Once buried at the corner of a ground(graveyard),
People will move out one by one.
(Thereafter) pythons will torch my sole body,
And will turn my every part of body into ashes

All the time u cultivated evils,
In old age claimed to be a saint.
Rosary has become like python,
Whom u are showing(Showing off) ur prayers?

In the depraved wind who will lit the candle?
Inspite of fuel, knowledge and way of life(Islam) will ignite it.
Enjoin good and forbid evil(daawah),
Compedium of whole knowledge is Alif Laam Meem(The starting words of Quran)


Keep count of your prayers and fasting,
Only this will go with you after death.
Take due care of ur way of life and faith,
Lest you are counted(in hereafter) in the company of Devil


''Nafsi kodus aeti aeti,
Nafsi korus pasheman.
Nafs chi madhosh haankal chaetti,
Nafs yem rott, su woat La Makaan.''

Translation:
The ego excrutiated me,
The ego made me remorseful.
The ego is intoxicated and will break away(i.e., make u transgress the limits set by Almighty),
One who tamed the ego reached the abode of Allah


Saying truth is making you tremble,
Lying is making you feel delighted.
You may prefer Iblees over Prophet(pbuh),
But He(Allah) is watching, do ye think u will conceal?(i.e., He even know what is in ur heart)


{Why did not u died after reading quran,
How come u wr not turned to ashes.
How come u are still alive,
Mansoor was turned into flames while reading Quran.
Those who wept day and night reading quran,
their bones got powdered (due to fear of Allah)
How come u remained in oblivion after reading quran,
And u wr robbed by hundreds of thieves(satan and co.)

Death's a lion.
How can you escape him?
From a flock of sheep
It 'II pick you up like a lamb 

Yath jaayi daff te rabab wazaan,
Tath jaayi shaitaan grazaan aasay.
Tee aasan karaan yeni aasi pazaan,
Taway sahib balaay sozaan aasay.
Myuuth khewaan te hazan mazaan,
Taway alakh te palakh dazaan aasay.
Kenh sheikh laagith watan peth rozaan,
Lukan paanas kun phiraan aasay.
Soann chih gob te telli koanih wazaan,
Sartal zeray wazaan aasay

Translation:
Where there is drum beaten,
There is devil (shaitan) roaming,
Doing the same which shouldn't be done,
Thats why you are being punished
Eating sweet and rolling and romaing,
Thats why cuke and spinach  burns.
Some pretend as saints and live on raods
Thus tending people towards themselves
Gold is heavier than why doesn't it sound
Copper is lighter thats why it sounds

Emotional Experiences (Karguzaris) of effort of tabligh

Professor Sanaullah sahab:
He was a student when he used to go in jamaths. His parents were angry with him, thinking that he was neglecting his studies. They decided to send him to france for his further studies. And he was sent to France. He could hardly find any mosque in France.
He then decided to meet muslims and he could hardly find any one since no one followed sunnath.
But a true Da’i (who calls towards islam ) will never step back even in the ocean of disbelievers. He finally found some muslims and was astonished to hear that they prayed Juma (Friday) prayer on Sundays. Since Sunday was a holiday and everyone can attend it.

He began to preach islam there and was able to bring back many muslims to islam and many non muslims also reverted. Many muslims and even arabs were found to leave islam there and were married to non-muslims. For example if a husband is a muslim his wife was Christian and they both lived in the same way.

Now alhamdulillah France is a place from where jamaths of 1 year also go to other countries for preaching islam.And there are more than thousand masjids now in a country which is called “father of fashion”.


Once professor went to france after a long time after returning to India. As soon as he landed in the airport it was prayer time, he went to mosque for prayer and was amazed to see a huge rush in the mosque. He asked a man there why is there so much rush is there any meeting ? . The man answered no daily our mosque will be filled like this for every prayer. And he started explaining we were ignorant of islam, but a man by name sanaullah came from India for his studies here and he was moved by seeing our lives. He started preaching islam here and today alhamdulillah almost all of us pray five times a day.

When professor heard this he started crying. The man asked him why are you crying. Another colleague of professor said that he himself is professor sanaullah. When the French man heard this he too started crying and grasped professor and starting shouting “our guide to islam is here, our guide to islam is here ” .
He is called with respect fateh (conqueror) of france.






A journey from England to India
Once a jamath was going to England. Colonel Amiruddin sahab was amir of jamath and they were total of four. They went to embassy in India they got visa to England. But that time they need to take permit from all countries in between. When they asked about that in embassy they said, no problem we all are friends. Just in each country when they ask, you just say India and that country are friends they will leave u. They went to England saying every country is our friend.

Jamath went to England they did Tabligh Alhamdulilla and they were returning back. In one country they asked the permit and colonel sahab said “we are friends”. That officer said no we are not friends we are enemies. Then colonel sahab was astonished. The actual reason was while they were returning some two countries waged war on each other. And jamath was coming from enemy country so they were treated as enemies. The jamath was captured and put in prison.

The area was so cold and the snow was fallimg. Heaters in their prison were put off. The time for some namaz came and colonel sahab did wazu with cold water (military blood), but remaining 3 people did taimum. And colonel sahab was leading namaz. When he was reciting quran his voice was shivering and 10 min prayer was read for about half an hour. Since recitation of quran aloud was not possible because of cold and shivering.

Because of severe cold one of colleague of jamath fainted. Even the water there was so cold that it would still lead to illness. Colonel sahab ordered everyone to do zikr of Allah. And he sat near his face and started doing Zikr after sometime sweat was pouring through the faces and hands of people in jamath.(( those who really fear Allah and do Zikr its not a common thing for them )) . they touched the whole body of the fainted colleague with sweat so that his body may feel some warmth.

When this all was going on the soldier who was standing near the prison was seeing this but the jamath didn’t notice him. When colonel sahab saw him, he just shouted “jinns” and ran away from there leaving his machine gun there. Because its hard to believe a person getting sweat in that much cold. .(( those who really fear Allah and do Zikr its not a common thing for them ))

After some time the military came and they asked jamath to come out of prison. Everyone was fearing to come near them, some how they came and the jamath was taken away under the shadow of rifles. The rifles were kept pointing at the back and head of every person in jamath. Machine guns were pointed at them. They were taken to railway station. And they were forced into one train.

The people in jamath asked colonel sahab what to do next. He said pointing towards ******. if train goes that side then read kalima-e-Tauhid, because there is no guarantee that we will be alive. If the train goes towards **** we have some. Their faces changed colour when the train started moving towards ******. Colonel sahab said now my dear friends recite kalima, unless Allah(swt) show some miracle its hard for us to be alive. Since ****** was a communist country and the war was there between other Islamic country.

During journey train became slow at one station, colonel sahab saw through window some people were waving to him. He went near door, they shouted jumped down, jump down, jump down oh people of Allah, they were Africans and they too know what is going to happen infront. Colonel sahab called his colleagues and they all jumped down from moving train, leaving all their belongings in train. The people who called them were of jamath of Africa actually and they were also facing similar problem. From there they entered iran through ****. Since Hyderabad, India had good connections with Iran that time and even now.

When they went to embassy and asked for sending jamath to India back. The officer said ok but when he saw passport he rejected. Because on passport there was **** stamp. He said ur coming from our enemy country. Allah (swt) blessed them and a man came to embassy for his personal work. He came to colonel sahab and said what are doing here. Colonel sahab remembered him, since he used to go to that mans hotel in Hyderabad. (There are many Iranians in Hyderabad).

Colonel sahab said that because of some reasons we were enable to go to India. That man said I will help u and he spoke to officers and said that colonel sahab is a good man and friend of mine. And finally they were allowed to go back to India. Allah (swt) shows ways and help for those who strive in his path.

See friends how our elders faced hardship in spreading Islam, we should really learn lesson from their lifes and prepare ourselves for spreading islam facing any kind of hardship, inshallah.

May allah(swt) gives us ability to work forspreading islam.

Tabligh in South Africa
It was the time when there was racism in south africa between whites and blacks.
And jamath was not given permission to enter into africa since they were blacks.
Hazrath moulana yousuf (rah) asked karnal sab " see u are a karnal and u must find a way to enter into africa " .
Then a plan was made using the map to enter into africa.According to map they have to walk in the jungles of Africa for around 4000 km.They walked by the name of Allah for around 7 months in jungles and entered africa.
but they could hardly spend 2 days that police caught them as many were indians and karnal sab was a white man.
They put the jamath in jail.
Since karnal sab was a white man they requested him to leave africa and they will make arrangement for that..but karnal sab denied and he said that we want to meet our brothers here.
The jamath was brought to the main officer..he asked karnal sab to write the reason of coming to africa..
Then karnal sab took the letter and wrote six points of tabligh and said we have come to learn this.
The letter was scanned by the intelligence of south africa and they sent a report saying we did not understand anything.
But they said we understood that you are not political and we are sorry for putting u in jail.
The government of south africa gave a apologise letter to karnal sab and they also said that if u come next time to our country we will give u one year permission for our mistake.
In the mean time people came to know that jamath has come from india and it is in prison, people of africa were bringing meals to prison.the meals were so much that they were distributed in prison and the meals brought by people were enough for all. Meanwhile by the grace of allah many of the prisoners accepted islam by seeing the atmosphere in jail by preachings of the jamath. 




Muslims in china :
A great scholar Moulana Jamal-ur-rahman from Hyderabad (brother of mufti Nawal-ur-rahman), went to china for the cause of Allah along with his friends, one of his friends explained how muslims are there in china. They welcomed them affectionately. Where ever Moulana went along with his friends people used to stand beside roads for viewing them. Translator said to Moulana that they were telling showing their small children “ See muslims will be like this ”. They usually don’t see people with Sunnah dress.

When Moulana stayed at hotel they used to bring some eatables and keep there and go away they could not talk since they don’t know language, but they use to simply grasp Moulana and his friends and cry.

Once Moulana went to a small village near by, when he was returning women used to touch Moulana body (since they are ignorant of Islamic laws) with hand and rub to the faces of their children, thinking it will be barkath for their children. And when Moulana was returning even women were running after the vehicle and showing their children to Moulana, they were sighing as though they were asking Moulana to pray for their children. Imagine friends how much respect they have for the people who work for the cause of Allah, though they don’t have good knowledge of Islam and everywhere there is communism.

Even in the country like china where communism is spread all over. Our elders have planted the flag of islam. 

From Don to Da’i (A man with great emaan) :
He had a rowdy sheet (I fear uttering these words) on his name. Police always kept an eye on him. He was a big don (I fear uttering these words) in his area. It was his life before.

Allah blessed him and on tashkeel he went in jamath. He knew the truth of life there and he repented from all his bad deeds. He later on became so pious and god fearing that elders say about him Moulana yousuf (rah) also a great scholar and god fearing man and amir of Tabligh used to ask him “ Fazlay karim I know Allah helps you, but I want to see Allah's help to you through my eyes, please show me once ”

He was a taxi driver and earned his living through it. And spent much in cause of Allah. He was a not an alim (scholar). I heard from elders one man asked him we are muslims we have emaan on Allah we don’t need to work on emaan. For this fazl e karim (rah) did 40 days speech only on emaan to him. After listening to speech that man said I didn’t really knew what emaan is till now.

Though he was not a scholar he was made Amir of Scholars. They used to be astonished when fazl e karim (rah) used to talk over emaan.

Why he was Amir of scholars we can understand from this !

Once Fazl e karim (rah) went to saharanpur to meet Zakariya (rah), Zakariya (rah) asked Fazl e karim (rah) to talk over emaan in the gathering and he sat infront of him. When Fazl e karim (rah) completed his speech Moulana Zakariya (rah) was crying and asked him “ please tell me do you think I have such emaan on Allah ” ( Allah hu akbar - Allah blessed this only to those people)

So every one call him with respect “ From don to Amir of Alim’s ”

I heard about him from many great people, I just couldn’t imagine people can change like him and have emaan like him. There is more to tell about him.

Sheik Jibraan:
His tittle was Ibn Taimiyya of this age.
He heard so much against Tabligh that he thought to study about them. But there was no literature about Tabligh. So he decided to go in jamath for 10 days. When alims of arab heard this they came to meet him and said that an alim like you should not go with these illiterate people. Some great alims also stopped him from going. When sheik saw this opposition now he decided firmly that I should go and study the work.

Later he went for 10 days and Allah(swt) blessed him with understanding. When he came back and started doing work of Tabligh. Some people kept false cases on him, and he was sent to prison. When the judge announced his imprisonment he started to laugh. The judge asked him why do u laugh?. He said I am laughing on my fate, Allah wants to begin my work of Tabligh from prison. He was announced for 10 years imprisonment.

When he went to prison first he called all ulemas who were in prison (since many ulema who stood firm on islam and did not co-operate with government were sent to prison). He presented work of Tabligh with all proofs and its necessity today. They all agreed with him. They also started doing Tabligh in prison. In one year all the prisoners were following true islam with all prayers five times a day, fasting, crying in tahajuth namaz.

After some days sheik was called for trials. When ever he used to go to court all the prisoners would go to prayer, zikr, dua and they used to pray that sheik should not be released from prison. When he used to come back they used to shout Allahuakbar, Allahuakbar. This is the love Allah (swt) keeps in the hearts of others for those people who strive in the path of Allah.

Later after 5 years the then prince came and appologised sheik for keeping him in prison for false cases and took him away from prison

Story of a boy

i heard a story of a young boy called either Abdul Azeez or Farooq, who is basically from pakistan, he worked in the path of Allah day and night, he came to tabligh markaz in Delhi, India. he became ill, people asked him to go away, but he didnt, since they were returning back after some days, his mom was waiting for him, since he has holidays and he would stay there, she happen to prepare eatables for her child, but her child never came back, his soul was taken aaway in Delhi markaz,

but next day an un expected guest came to her house, she saw a dream and her son came running to her and said, mom a great guest has come to her house where are the eatables u have prepared, and he took all the eatables to the guest room, and then he came back and said to her mom, that the guest wants to meet u, he took her mother to guest room, as he opened the door she couldnt see anything bcoz of the noor in the room, then she saw a man sitting there and he was Prophet Mohammed . He was smiling at that mother and Prophet said something to her.

and then Prophet stood up and walked away and his son was walking behind Prophet Mohammed

Became a queen of beauty:
Bewitched my youth was by flowers.

Blown off by WULAR wind; (biggest lake in Kashmir)
Divested by robbers, I was
In dazzling bewilderment:
Ruffled my half-cooked rice became
By bran and husk
While a poor man's day
Passed for a year.

 


Aradana
a) That Lana of Padmanpora
Gulp by gulp who nectar drank,
And saw Shiva face to face everywhere
Grant me that boon, O Deva!
b) The speaking damsels of Loka—Bhawan
And the dumb socio—human ones,
Took flight with birds;
Grant me that boon, O Deva !
c) Janak Reshi of Dandakvan.
Living on herbs, wild fruit, was
A perfect Bhakta, a pearl among devotees !

Who fed a thousand people

You blessed Shethi Srikantha,

i) In time should I act for my future;
Maybe, it may bear fruit ;
Meekly'ld I exhort Him;
Maybe, He may bless Nund too !

Avariciously, I Filled My Belly
Avariciously, I filled my belly

Sinned I and earned

Bathe Out of Sight
Bathe out of sight,
Meditate in secluded isolation,
Be regular in action don't forget,
But-- out of sight;
Should you forget, you'll regret !

 


Bear with: As you sow, so shall you Reap
(a) Bear with the calls from the compound, friend.
Respond to your inner voice:

Numbness overtook that Muslim and.

Fear, Attachment and Violent Thought
Fear, attachment and violent thought,
I shunned,
For a whole life-time,
I followed
But one path, and then,
Bathed in the waters of contemplation,
I walked to a sojourn
In blissful seclusion!
 


Feed the Hungry, If You Can
Feed the Hungry, if you can,
Ask not the caste of the naked:
Gain a thousand times
The virtue,
Nor would you ever lose it,
Dear brother, Nunda !
 


He Who Sits In Vigil
He who sits in vigil
At His door,
To him, He 'II offer
His own sherbet (Medicine):
His devotees are different but,
Only with one prayer;
He, whom He blesses,
Will prosper!
 


He, Who Ploughs The Field, Reaps The Crop
(a) Be conscientious in doing your duty, man,
Plough the field, to harvest the crop
In autumn and. provide for
Your comforts in the cold month of magh:
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop !
(b) Blind is the spring, keep't in view,
Be quick to collect the material of
Seed, and store's at home:
Don't you lag behind, for
The spring is elusive, man;
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop !
(c) Lend no ear to falsehood now,
Winter lies ahead, and freezing cold
Daughters and daughters-in-law, children
And grand-children regard him, who
Ploughs the field and reaps the crop:
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop !
(d) Deluding is the hunger;
Yoke it to the plough,
Scare't away.with the whip of fasting;
Thus wouldn't it hinder the polughshare:
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop !
(e) Keep the kit trim and your ploughshare;
Attend to your ablutions, it's dawn,
The usual time for prayers.
Shun listlessness, caste and pray:
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop !
(f) Full of weeds is your field,
Enter with determination and deweed it
Bend you must in blazing heat
To deweed your field:
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop !
(g) Devote your time to Islamic work:
Shun lassitude, Kalima's the lighthouse of
Your knowledge at home:
Duly attend to daily 'Nimaz' pilgrimage and
Graceful alms-giving: For,
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop !
(h) Many times, the seed is the ear of crops:
Many times more though latent, is CORDIALITY.
Still more beneficial is contemplation of God:
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop !
(i) Beware of the watchman:
Day by day, He counts the stockpiles:
 Truly fear the Landlord;
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop:
(j) The king of fate, pounces on the crop:
Rise with confidence and show......
The attainments of your endeavour:
And when, the king's gone,
Contemplate on' What He said ':
He, who sows the seed reaps the crop !
(k) Estimates of every field, they'll make and,
Name every kind of fruit.....................
Collecting all, they'll seal the stores:
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop !
(l) They'll force him divide bagfuls of crops
And make him, sort out grain by grain.
Reaping, collecting, separating, winnowing,
They'll induce him to weigh the harvest;
He, who sows the seed, reaps the crop
(m) With the display of a sword,
To begin with, they'll warn him against
Irresponsible sloth, listlessness, and
Ask him to be careful in future:
God forbid, maybe, they'll get him lashed too:

 What is the truth behind music being haram?

    القول الفاصل فى صوت اللهو والباطل

    AL-QAWL UL FAASIL FI SAWTIL LAHWI WAL BATIL


    In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

    Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

    Music has been rendered as impermissible in both, the Quran and Ahadith. Below are few examples which are sufficient to illustrate the impermissibility of music in Islam.


    QURAN


    (1) Allah Taala mentions


    ((وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًا أُولَئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ))


    ((From amongst men there are those who purchase ‘lahw al hadith’ without knowledge, to mislead from the Path of Allah and they ridicule it. For them there is a humiliating punishment)). (Luqmân: 6)


    The following great Commentators state that ‘lahw al hadith’ in the above verse refers to music….

    a) Abdullah ibn Mas‘ûd radiyallâhu ‘anhu

    b) Jâbir ibn ‘Abdillah radiyallâhu ‘anhu

    c) Abdullâh ibn ‘Abbâs radiyallâhu ‘anhu

    d) Hasan al-Basrî rahimahu Allah

    e) Ikrimah rahimahu Allah

    f) Ebrahim an Nakhi rahimahu Allah

    g) Maymoon bin Mahran rahimahu Allah

    h) Qatada rahimahu Allah

    i) Sa‘îd ibn Jubayr rahimahu Allah

    j) Mujâhid rahimahu Allah

    k) Amr ibn Shu`ayb rahimahu Allah

    l) Ali ibn Badhîmah rahimahu Allah

    m) Habeeb rahimahu Allah

    n) Makhûl. rahimahu Allah

    o) Abd al Kareem rahimahu Allah

    p) Ibn Zakhr rahimahu Allah

    q) Ataa al Khuraasaani rahimahu Allah


    The two greatest commentators of this Ummah, Abdullah bin Masood and Abdullah bin Abbaas (radiyallâhu ‘anhuma), used to take an oath and say that this verse refers to music.

    (2) In Surah Bani Israeel, Allah Ta’ala mentioned to the devil


    ((وَاسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ مِنْهُمْ بِصَوْتِكَ ....الخ )) (64)


    ((And gradually befool those who you can from them with your voice (songs, music etc)….) (Bani Israeel 64)


    The following illustrious commentators opined that ‘…your voice’ in the above mentioned verse refers to music…

    (3) The third verse which proves the impermissibility of music is the concluding verses of Surah Furqan where Allah has enumerated that one of the outstanding qualities of His slaves is that they distance themselves from music.


    وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ الزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا بِاللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا كِرَامًا


    ((And they are those who do not witness ‘Zoor’, and when they pass by futile activities, they pass in a dignified way)) (Furqan 72)


    The following illustrious Commentators are of the opinion that ‘Zoor’ means music…

    (4) Allah rebukes those who listen to music in the following verses


    أَفَمِنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ (59) وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ (60) وَأَنْتُمْ سَامِدُونَ (61) فَاسْجُدُوا لِلَّهِ وَاعْبُدُوا (62)


    ((Are you astonished at this recitation (the Quran)? And you laugh and do not cry, (Wasting your time) in vanities (music). So fall in prostration to Allah and worship him)) (An Najm 59-62)


    The following distinguished commentators suggest that ‘vanities’ refers to music…..

    (5) Another verse which could be cited is the following…


    وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَا إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا (32)


    ((And go not close to unlawful sex, verily it is a ‘fahisha’ (anything that that transgresses its limits: a great sin) and (it is) an evil way.)


    Music plays a great role in stimulating one’s emotions, lusts and passions and also leads to various physiological disorders. This is a proven concept in psychology. Our pious predecessors also understood this well….


    ذم الملاهي - (ج 1 / ص 51) شعب الإيمان للبيهقي - (ج 11 / ص 106)

    حدثنا محمد ، قال : حدثنا الحسين ، قال : حدثنا عبد الله ، قال : حدثني إبراهيم بن محمد المروزي ، عن أبى عثمان الليثي ، قال : قال يزيد بن الوليد الناقص : يا بني أمية إياكم والغناء فإنه ينقص الحياة ويزيد في الشهوة ويهدم المروءة ، فإنه لينوب عن الخمر ، يفعل ما يفعل السكر ، فإن كنتم لا بد فاعلين فجنبوه النساء ، فإن الغناء داعية الزنا


    Yazeed bin Waleed An Naqidh (rahimahullah) has advised: “Oh Bani Ummayah, save yourselves from music, as it would decrease your modesty, increases your lust and demolish your morality. It would create within you the fondness of wine and it will lead you to do what a drunken person does. If (as a last resort) you really have to listen to music then, at least save your womenfolk from it for verily music leads to fornication.” (Narrated by Ibn Abi ad Dunya in dham al malahi and Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)


    ذم الملاهي - (ج 1 / ص 56) شعب الإيمان للبيهقي - (ج 11 / ص 105)

    حدثنا محمد ، قال : حدثنا الحسين ، قال : حدثنا عبد الله ، قال : وحدثني الحسين بن عبد الرحمن ، قال : قال فضيل بن عياض : الغناء رقية الزنا

    Fuzail bin Ayaaz (rahimahullah) has said: “Music is the catalyst to zina” (Narrated by Ibn Abi ad Dunya in dham al malahi and Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)


    AHADITH


    The Ahadith are also explicit and clear concerning the prohibition of music. Listed hereunder are a few authentic Ahadith. We have cited the referances for all the Ahaadith and where need be, we have elucidated on the chains (in Arabic). This will be appreciated by the academics and will not be a means of confusion for the laymen.


    If a hadith was narrated through more than one chain, we have merely indicated to the other chains and did not mention the same hadith with different chains as different Ahadith (as was the practice of Muhaddithoon).


    (1) وقال هشام بن عمار حدثنا صدقة بن خالد حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن يزيد بن جابر حدثنا عطية بن قيس الكلابى حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن غنم الأشعرى قال حدثنى أبو عامر – أو أبو مالك – الأشعرى والله ما كذبنى سمع النبى – صلى الله عليه وسلم – يقول « ليكونن من أمتى أقوام يستحلون الحر والحرير والخمر والمعازف ،الحديث » (اخرجه البخاري في صحيحه و ابو داود في سننه وابن حبان في صحيحه و الطبراني في المعجم الكبيرو مسند الشاميين ودعلج السجزي في المنتقي)


    (1) Abû `Amir (or Abû Mâlik) al-Ash`arî (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) mentions that Rasûlullâh sallallâhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:

    ((Indeed, there will be in my Ummah such people who will regard as permissible for themselves fornication, silk, wine and musical instruments…..)) (Narrated by Imam Bukhari in his Saheeh, Abu Dawood in his Sunan, Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh, Tabrani in Mujam al Kabeer and Musnad ash Shamiyeen and by Da’laj in Al Muntaqa)


    قلت و اما الاعتراض الذي اورده ابن حزم علي الحديث المذكور فلا يلتفت اليه . و من اراد الاجوبة بالتفصيل فليرجع الي تغليق التعليق - (ج 3 / ص 216) و مقدمة الفتح - (ج 1 / ص 449) و أضواء البيان في تفسير القرآن بالقرآن - (ج 4 / ص 434)لمحمد امين الشنقيطي و تهذيب سنن ابي داود وإيضاح مشكلاته - (ج 2 / ص 227) لابن القيم و شرح النووي على مسلم - (ج 1 / ص 18 دار إحياء التراث العربي - بيروت)


    (2) حدثنا عبد الله بن سعيد حدثنا معن بن عيسى عن معاوية بن صالح عن حاتم بن حريث عن مالك بن أبى مريم عن عبد الرحمن بن غنم الأشعرى عن أبى مالك الأشعرى قال قال رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « ليشربن ناس من أمتى الخمر يسمونها بغير اسمها يعزف على رءوسهم بالمعازف والمغنيات يخسف الله بهم الأرض ويجعل منهم القردة والخنازير ».(رواه ابن ماجه في سننه و ابن حبان في صحيحه و البخاري في الجامع الكبير و البيهقي في سننه و كذا في شعب الايمان و الأداب و ابن ابي شيبه في مصنفه و الطبراني في المعجم الكبير و مسند الشاميين و ابو نعيم في معرفة الصحابة و البغوي و ابن الاعرابي في معجمه والمحاملي في اماليه قال البيهقى ولهذا شواهد من حديث على وعمران بن حصين وعبد الله بن بسر وسهل بن سعد وأنس بن مالك وعائشة رضى الله عنهم عن النبى -صلى الله عليه وسلم-.)


    (2) Nabi (sall Allahu alayhi wasallam) has said: ((Indeed, people will change the name of wine to consume it and play with musical instruments, Allah will cause the earth to swallow them and change them into monkeys and swines)) (Narrated by Ibn Majah in his sunan, Ibn Hibbaan in his saheeh, Al Bukhari in Jami al Kabeer, Al Bayhaqi in his Sunan, Al Aadaab and Shuab al Iman, Ibn Abi Shaybah in his Mussannaf, At Tabrani in Al Mujam al Kabeer and Musnad ash Shamiyeen, Al Baghwi, Ibn A’rabi etc)


    (3) حدثنا عباد بن يعقوب الكوفى حدثنا عبد الله بن عبد القدوس عن الأعمش عن هلال بن يساف عن عمران بن حصين أن رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قال « فى هذه الأمة خسف ومسخ وقذف ». فقال رجل من المسلمين يا رسول الله ومتى ذاك قال « إذا ظهرت القينات والمعازف وشربت الخمور ». (اخرجه الترمذي و قال وهذا حديث غريب. وقد روى هذا الحديث عن الأعمش عن عبد الرحمن بن سابط عن النبى -صلى الله عليه وسلم- مرسلا و اخرجه الداني في "السنن الواردة في الفتن" وابن النجار في " ذيل تاريخ بغداد " و الروياني في مسنده كذا أخرجه ابن أبي الدنيا في " ذم الملاهي " عن عمران بن حصين مرفوعا به . يرويه عبد الله بن عبد القدوس قال :حدثني الأعمش عن هلال بن يساف عنه . و رجاله صدوقون غير أن عبد الله هذا قال عنه الحافظ في " التقريب " "صدوق رمي بالرفض وكان أيضا يخطئ" فهو حسن الحديث يستشهد به .. ثم اخرج ابن ابي الدنيا الحديث من طرق اخري يشد بعضها بعضا عن جمع من الصحابة و عن غيرهم . منها:

    (1) انس مرفوعا به يرويه ابو بكر الهزلي عن قتادة عنه و ابو بكر الهذلي هذا ضعفه الذهبي في العبر . وقال ابن معين: ليس بشيء. وقال أحمد: ضعيف. وقال البخاري: لَيْسَ بالحافظ و قال ابن حجر في "التقريب":"متروك الحديث "

    (2) أبو أمامة الباهلي مرفوعا به نحوه . يرويه فرقد السبخي حدثني عاصم بن عمرو البجلي عنه . ثم أخرجه عن علي بن ثابت عن فرقد

    السبخي عن أبي أمامة به . و أحمد من الطريق الأولى . قال الذهبي عن فرقد وفيه ضعف.و قال ابن حبان في "المجروحين":" وفرقد السبخى ليس بشئ في الحديث" .قال يحيى القطان ما يعجبنى الحديث عن فرقد السبخى، وقال سليمان بن حرب نا حماد بن زيد قال سألت ايوب عن فرقد السبخى فقال ليس بشئ،

    (3) عائشة مرفوعا به . يرويه أبو معشر عن محمد بن المنكدر عنها . و أبو معشر - اسمه نجيح بن عبد الرحمن السندي - قال عنه أبو حاتم: كان أحمد لا يرضاه،و قال الحافظ في "التقريب": "ضعيف من السادسة أسن واختلط" وقال صالح بن محمد صدوق يحدث عن الضعفاء غير ان عثمان الدارمي نقل عن ابن معين انه قال لا بأس به وقال عبد الخالق بن منصور عن ابن معين ثقة وقال الدارقطني ثقة وذكره ابن حبان في الثقات و كذا اخرج له مسلم و ابو داود

    (4) سهل بن سعد الساعدي مرفوعا به . يرويه عبد الرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم عن أبي حازم عنه واخرجه الروياني في مسنده و عبد بن حميد في مسنده و الطبراني في المعجم الكبير

    (5) عبد الرحمن بن سابط مرسلا - و لم يذكر القينات . و إسناده صحيح مرسل . والمرسل يحتج به عند الجمهور و اخرجه الداني في "السنن الواردة في الفتن" و ابو شيبة في مصنفه

    (6) عن أبي هريرة مرفوعا نحوه . يرويه سليمان بن سالم أبو داود قال :حدثنا حسان بن أبي سنان عن رجل عنه و الظاهر ان رجاله موثقون غير الرجل الذي لم يسم ،

    و اخرج احمد هذا الحديث عن سعيد بن المسيب و إبراهيم النخعي مرسلا . و فيه فرقد فيه ضعف كما سبق قول الذهبي ، لكن إذا انضم إليه ما لم يشتد ضعفه من الأحاديث المتقدمة ، و خاصة حديث ابن سابط المرسل الصحيح السند ، فلا يشك حينئذ أن الحديث يصح الاحتجاج به. و لاسيما و له شاهد من حديث أبي مالك الأشعري. و أما الشطر الأول منه فقد صح من حديث عبد الله بن عمرو ، و له شواهد أخرى


    (3) ‘Imrân ibn Husayn (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Rasûlullâh sallallâhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:

    ((In this Ummah there will be [people who will be] sunk into the earth, deformed, and upon whom stones will rain from heaven.))

    When the Sahâbî enquired as to when will that be, Rasûlullâh sallallâhu ‘alayhi wasallam replied:

    ((When singing girls and instruments of music will appear (become prevalent), and wine will be drunk.)) (Narrated by Tirmidhi, Ad Dani, Ibn Abi ad Dunya, Ruyani and others. This hadith is narrated with numerous chains)


    NOTE: Because of being narrated through seven different chains, we could have narrated this same hadith as a minimum of seven different Ahadith (as is the practice of Muhaddithoon, In fact, Ibn Abi ad Dunya and others did mention this very same hadith as over seven Ahadith because of the different chains). Nevertheless, we have sufficed by mentioning it only once, and explained all the various chains in Arabic.


    (4) حدثناعمرو بن علي ، قال : ثناابو عاصم ، قال : ثنا شبيب بن بشر البجلي ، قال : سمعت انس بن مالك يقول: قال رسول الله صلي الله عليه وسلم : « صوتان ملعونان في الدنيا والآخرة : مزمار عند نعمة ورنة عند مصيبة ». (اخرجه البزار و الضياء المقدسي و ابن مردويه و البيهقي و ابو نعيم و قال الهيثمي و المنذري رجاله ثقات . و قال الحافظ في مختصر زوائد البزار وشبيب وثق)


    (4) Anas bin Malik (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) mentions that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said:

    ((Two voices are cursed in this world and the hereafter; Music at the time of happiness and wailing at the time of calamity)) (Narrated by Al Bazzar, Adh Dhiyaa al Maqdisi, Ibn Murduyah, Al Bayhaqi, Abu Nuaim and others. Allama Haythami and Allamah Mundhiri both said: “The narrators are reliable” i.e. this hadith is authentic)


    قال المناوي :

    ((هو الآلة التي يرمز بها بكسر الميم قال الشارح : والمراد هنا الغناء لا القصبة التي يرمز بها كما دل عليه كلام كثير من الشراح )) (فيض القدير - (ج 4 / ص 210 المكتبة التجارية الكبرى - مصر)


    (5) حدثنا الحسن بن عرفة ، قال : ثنا النضر بن إسماعيل ، قال : ثنا ابن أبي ليلى ، عن عطاء ، عن جابر بن عبد الله ، عن عبد الرحمن بن عوف ، قال : « أخذ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بيدي ……. فقال إنما نهيت عن النوح عن صوتين أحمقين فاجرين : صوت عند نعمة لعب ولهو ومزامير شيطان ، وصوت عند مصيبة خمش وجوه وشق جيوب ورنة شيطان الحديث». (اخرجه الترمذي و قال هذا حديث حسن.وكذا رواه عبد بن حميد في مسنده و الطحاوي في شرح معاني الاثار و البزار في مسنده و البغوي في شرح السنة و البيهقي في سننه و شعب الايمان و الاداب و الاجري تحريم النرد والشطرنج و ابن ابي الدنيا في ذم الملاهي و الحاكم في مستدركه و ابن سعد في طبقاته و أحمد بن منيع ، وأبويعلى الموصلي و ابن ابي شيبة في مصنفه و قال الهيثمي وفيه محمد بن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى وفيه كلام. و لكن حسن الترمذي هذا الحديث وأقره الزيلعي في نصب الراية وابن القيم في الإغاثة فهو صالح للاحتجاج)


    (5) Abdur Rahman bin Auf (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said:

    ((Verily I have been prohibited from two asinine and evil voices: a voice at the time of happiness; play, leisure and MUSIC…..)) (Narrated by Abd bin Humaid, At Tahawi, Al Bazzar, Al Baghwi, Al Bayhaqi, Al Aajuri, Ibn Abi ad Dunya, Al Hakim, Ahmad bin Manee’, Abu Ya’la al Musily, Ibn Abi Shayba and At Tirmidhi said that this narration is ‘hasan’(good and sound)

    (6) حدثنا أبو داود قال : حدثنا الفرج بن فضالة ، عن علي بن يزيد ، عن القاسم بن عبد الرحمن مولى يزيد بن معاوية عن أبي أمامة ، قال : قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم : إن الله عز وجل بعثني هدى ورحمة للعالمين وأمرني بمحق المعازف ، والمزامير ، والأوثان والصلب وأمر الجاهلية ». (اخرجه الطيالسي في مسنده و احمد في مسنده و الطبراني في المعجم الكبير وابن عبد البر في جامع بيان العلم وفضله.والحسن بن سفيان ، وابن منده ، وأبو نعيم فى الحلية ، و الروياني في مسنده و الحارث كما فى بغية الباحث و الاشيب في جزئه والهيثمي في غاية المقصد وابن النجار عن أنس وضعفه السيوطي و قال ابن عبد البر : ليس اسناده بالقوي قال الهيثمى : فيه على بن يزيد ، وهو ضعيف و فيه فرج بن فضالة بن النعمان التنوخي الشامي و هو ضعيف. و اخرجه الآجري من طريق اخر فيه علي فقط و اخرجه البيهقي و ابو نعيم من طريق ابراهيم بن سويد قال ، ثنا هلال بن زيد بن يسار ، عن أنس بن مالك و اخرجه ابن ابي الدنيا من طريق شجاع بن الأشرس ، قال : حدثنا حشرج بن نباتة ، عن أبى عبد الملك ، عن عبد الله بن أنيس ، عن جده ، عن أبى أمامة واخرجه الآجري في تحريم النرد والشطرنج عن ابي محمد عبد الله بن محمد بن ناجية قال ، حدثنا عباد بن يعقوب ، حدثنا موسى بن عمير عن جعفر بن محمد ، عن أبيه ، عن جده ، عن علي بن أبي طالب ، و رواه في "حديث أبي بكر الآجري" (مخطوط) قال حدثنا عبد الله بن حيان ، نا عبد الله بن ناجية ، نا سويد ، نا محمد بن فرات ، عن أبي إسحاق ، عن الحارث ، عن علي بن أبي طالب ، عن النبي ، قال : " بعثني الله لمحق المزامير والمعازف والأوثان التي كانت تعبد في الجاهلية والخمور ، وأقسم ربي بعزته لا يشربها عبد في الدنيا إلا سقاه بمثل ما شرب منها من حميم جهنم ، وأقسم ربي بعزته لا يسقينها عبد له صبيا لا يعقلها إلا سقاه بمثل ما سقاه منها من حميم جهنم ، وأقسم ربي لا يدعها عبد مخافة له إلا سقاه الله إياه في حظيرة القدس ، قال : وقال الله : أهل الجنة يشربون فيها يكرمهم الله بذلك وساقه ابن عدي في الكامل حدثنا من طبثق سويد بن سعيد قال ثنا محمد بن الفرات عن أبي إسحاق عن الحارث عن علي عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بعثني ربي عزوجل بمحق المزامير والمعازف والأوثان التي كانت تعبد في الجاهلية والخمور وأقسم ربي بعزته لا يشربها عبد في الدنيا إلا سقاه بمثل ما شرب منها من حميم جهنم وأقسم ربي بعزته لا يسقيها عبد صبيا لا يعقلها إلا سقاه مثل ما سقى صبيه من حميم جهنم وأقسم ربي لا يدعها أحد مخافة الله إلا سقاه إياها في حضرة القدس وكان يأتيه أهل الجنة يشربونها فيه يكرمهم الله بذلك رضي الله عنهما فارتقت درجته بهذه المجموعة الي الحسن ان شاء الله)


    (6) Abu Muawiyyah (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said:

    ((Verily Allah azza wa jall has sent me with guidance and as a mercy to mankind and (inspite of this) he ordered me to obliterate musical instruments, idols, the cross and things of ignorance)) (Narrated by At Tayalisi, Ahmad, At Tabrani in Mujam al Kabeer, Ibn Abdul Barr, Hassan Bin Sufyaan, Ibn Munda, Abu Nuaim, Ar Ruyani, Al Harith, Al Ashyab, Al Haythami, Al Ajuri, Ibn An Najjjar, Ibn Adi and others. This hadith is hasan li ghairihi (good because of a few corroborating chains)


    (7) حدثنا أبو نصر أحمد بن سهل الفقيه ببخارى ثنا أبو عصمة سهل بن المتوكل ثنا محمد بن عبد الله الرقاشي ثنا جعفر بن سليمان ثنا فرقد السبخي عن عاصم بن عمرو عن أبي أمامة رضي الله عنه : عن النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم قال : « يبيت قوم من هذه الأمة على طعام و شراب و لهو فيصبحون قد مسخوا خنازير و ليخسفن بقبائل فيها و في دور فيها حتى يصبحوا فيقولوا خسف الليلة ببني فلان خسف الليلة بدار بني فلان و أرسلت عليهم حصباء حجارة كما أرسلت حجارة كما أرسلت على قوم لوط و أرسلت عليهم الريح العقيم فتنسفهم كما نسفت من كان قبلهم بشربهم الخمر و أكلهم الربا و لبسهم الحرير و اتخاذهم القينات و قطيعتهم الرحم قال : و ذكر خصلة أخرى فنسيتها ». أخرجه أحمد وابن أبي الدنيا في مسنده والخرائطس في مساوئ الأخلاق والأصبهاني في " الترغيب " و كذا الطيالسي و أبو نعيم في الحلية وابن عساكر في التاريخ وابن مردويه والبيهقي والحاكم وصححه و قال هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم الي جعفر فأما فرقد فإنهما لم يخرجاه وأقره الذهبي على هذا


    (7) Abu Umamah (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said:

    ((A group of my Ummah will spend a night in food, drinks and party, they would wake up the next morning deformed into swine’s and few tribes would be submerged into the earth, people would wake up saying: “The earth has sunk in the locality of a certain tribe. And stones would be showered upon them as it was showered on the nation of Lut. A devastating wind will be sent on them and scatter them as it did to those before them. (The reason for this) will be due to drinking wine, devouring interest, adorning silk, KEEPING SINGING GIRLS and breaking family ties.(A narrator says: “Another quality was mentioned which I cannot recall”.) (Narrated by Ahmad, Ibn Abi ad Dunya, Al Kharaeety, Al Isbahani, At Tayalisi, Abu Nuaim, Ibn Asaakir, Ibn Mardooyah, Al Bayhaqi, Al Hakim and others. Al Hakim graded it as authentic mentioning that it fufills the conditions of Imam Muslim.)


    (8) أخبرنا عبد الله بن محمد الأزدي ، حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم ، أخبرنا الوليد بن مسلم ، عن سعيد بن عبد العزيز ، عن سليمان بن موسى ، عن نافع ، قال : سمع ابن عمر صوت زمارة راع ، قال : فجعل إصبعيه في أذنيه ، وعدل عن الطريق وجعل ، يقول : يا نافع أتسمع ؟ فأقول : نعم ، فلما قلت : لا ، راجع الطريق ، ثم ، قال : « هكذا رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يفعله ». (اخرجه ابو داود و ابن حبان في صحيحه و الطبراني في المعجم الكبير و الاوسط و احمد في مسنده و البيهقي في شعب الايمان والآجري وابن سعد و ابن ابي الدنيا في الورع و ذم الملاهي به وبعض طرقه صحيح وقال الحافظ أبو الفضل محمد بن نصر السلامي : " حديث صحيح " كما في تفسير الآلوسي و كف الرعاع)


    (8) Nafi (Rahimullah) narrates that Ibn Umar (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) heard the (sound of the) musical instruments of a shepherd. He immediately placed his hands in his ears and changed his route and continuously asked: “Oh Nafi, Can you still hear?” (Nafi says): “I constantly replied in the possitive. When I finally said that I could not hear, Ibn Umar resumed his route. Thereafter, Ibn Umar mentioned: “This is what Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) did.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood, Ibn Hibbaan, At Tabrani in Al Kabeer and Al Awsat, Ahmad, Al Bayhaqi, Al Haythami, Al Aajuri, Ibn Sad, Ibn Abi ad Dunya in Al War’ and Dham al malahi and others. This hadith is narrated through chains which are authentic. Abul Fadhl As Sulamy also said that this hadith is authentic)


    وقد احتج قوم بهذا الخبر على إباحة المزمار وقالوا : لو كان حراما لمنع النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم ابن عمر من سماعه ومنع ابن عمر نافعا من استماعه ولأنكر على الزامر بها قلنا : الأول لا يصح لأن المحرم استماعها دون سماعها والاستماع غير السماع ولهذا فرق الفقهاء في سجود التلاوة بين السامع والمستمع ولم يوجبوا على من سمع شيئا محرما سد أذنيه قال الله تعالى : { وإذا سمعوا اللغو أعرضوا عنه } ولم يقل سدوا آذانهم والمستمع هو الذي يستمع ولم يوجد هذا من ابن عمر وإنما وجد السماع ولأن بالنبي صلى الله عليه و سلم حاجة إلى معرفة انقطاع سماع الصوت عنه لأنه عدل عن الطريق وسد أذنيه فلم يكن ليرجع إلى الطريق ولا يرفع اصبعيه من أذنيه حتى ينقطع الصوت عنه فأبيح للحاجة وأما الإنكار فلعله كان في أول الهجرة حينما لم يكن الإنكار واجبا أو قبل إمكان الإنكار لكثرة الكفار وقلة أهل الإسلام ( الشرح الكبير - (ج 12 / ص 49)


    (9) وعن عبد الله بن عمرو رفع الحديث قال مثل الذي يجلس على فراش المغنية مثل الذي نهشه أسود من أساود يوم القيامة. رواه الطبراني ورجاله ثقات. (مجمع الزوائد ومنبع الفوائد)


    (9) Abdullah bin Amr narrates from Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “The similitude of a person who sits on the bed of a singing girl is like that person who is devoured by a black snake from the black snakes of the day of Qiyamah.” (Majma az Zawaaid with reference to At Tabrani. Allamah Haythami said that the narrators are authentic)


    (10) حدثنا أبو عبيدة بن فضيل بن عياض ، حدثنا أبو سعيد ، حدثنا عبد الرحمن أبو العلاء ، حدثنا محمد بن مهاجر ، عن كيسان مولى معاوية قال : خطبنا معاوية فقال : « إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن سبع ، وأنا أنهاكم عنهن ، ألا إن منهن : النوح ، والغناء ، والتصاوير ، والشعر ، والذهب ، وجلود السباع ، والتبرج ، والحرير » (رواه ابو يعلي في مسنده قلت: رواه النسائي باختصار.رواه الطبراني بإسنادين رجال أحدهما ثقات.)


  
 (10) Kaisan, the freed slave of Muawiyyah (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) says: “Muawiyyah once delivered a sermon in which he said: “Oh people, verily Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) prohibited seven actions and I also prohibit you from: (The nine actions are)…... music…” (Narrated by At Tabrani and Abu Ya’la in his Musnad. Allamah Haythami said that the narrators of one chain are all reliable)


    (11) حدثنا محمد بن بشار قال ثنا أبو أحمد قال ثنا سفيان عن علي بن بذيمة قال حدثني قيس بن حبتر النهشلي عن ابن عباس عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم قال : « ….. إن الله حرم علي أو حرم الخمر والميسر والكوبة ». قال « وكل مسكر حرام ». قال سفيان فسألت علي بن بذيمة عن الكوبة قال " الطبل ." ( اخرجه ابو داود في سننه و ابن حبان في صحيحه و ابو يعلي الموصلي في مسنده و الطحاوي في شرح معاني الاثار و البيهقي في سننه و احمد في مسنده و الاشربة و الطوسي في اربعينه و ابن المقرئ في معجمه و ابن ابي الدنيا في ذم الملاهي)


    (11) Ibn Abbaas (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “Verily Allah has prohibited wine, gambling and ‘the drum’.” Thereafter he said: “And every intoxicant is forbidden.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood in his Sunan, Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh, Abu Ya’la Al Mausali in his Musnad, At Tahawi in Sharh Ma’ani al Aathaar, Al Bayhaqi in his Sunan, Ahmad in his Musnad and Al Ashribah,At Toosi in his Arbaeen,Ibn Al Muqri in his Mujam,Ibn Abi ad Dunya and others. This hadith is authentic

    مضي قول الثوري وقال السيوطي في الجامع الكبير (الكوبة) : هى الطبل الصغير .و كذا قال ابن ابي الدنيا في ذم الملاهي

    The above mentioned Ahadith are all authentic and sufficient to use as evidence. Nevertheless, hereunder we have cited a few more Ahadith with varying status. Although some of these narrations are relevantly weaker than those that were quoted above, they nonetheless lend strength to the prohibition of music.


    (12) - حدثنا بقية وأبو المغيرة عن أبي بكر بن أبي مريم عن حجر بن مالك الكندي عن قبيصة بن ذؤيب قال قال رسول الله عليه وسلم « ليؤفكن من هذه الأمة قوم قردة وقوم خنازير وليصبحن فيقال خسف بدار بني فلان ودار بني فلان وبينما الرجلان يمشيان يخسف بأحدهما قالوا يا رسول الله وبم ذلك قال بشرب الخمور ولباس الحرير والضرب بالمعازف و الزمارة». ( اخرجه نعيم بن حماد في الفتن)


    (12) It is narrated from Qubaisah (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “A group of people from this Ummah will be changed to monkeys and a group (will be converted to) swines. People will awake in the morning and remark that the earth has sunk in the locality of a certain tribe and also in the locality of so and so tribe. While two people are walking, one of them will sink.” Sahabah enquired the reason of all this. Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) replied: “Because of drinking wine, wearing silk and using musical instruments.” (Narrated by Nuaim bin Hammad in his Al Fitan)


    (13) حدثنا صالح بن عبد الله الترمذى حدثنا الفرج بن فضالة أبو فضالة الشامى عن يحيى بن سعيد عن محمد بن عمرو بن على عن على بن أبى طالب قال قال رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « إذا فعلت أمتى خمس عشرة خصلة حل بها البلاء ». فقيل وما هن يا رسول الله قال « إذا كان المغنم دولا والأمانة مغنما والزكاة مغرما وأطاع الرجل زوجته وعق أمه وبر صديقه وجفا أباه وارتفعت الأصوات فى المساجد وكان زعيم القوم أرذلهم وأكرم الرجل مخافة شره وشربت الخمور ولبس الحرير واتخذت القينات والمعازف ولعن آخر هذه الأمة أولها فليرتقبوا عند ذلك ريحا حمراء أو خسفا ومسخا ». اخرجه الترمذي والداني في الفتن و ابن ابي الدنيا و قال الترمذي هذا حديث غريب لا نعرفه من حديث على بن أبى طالب إلا من هذا الوجه ولا نعلم أحدا رواه عن يحيى بن سعيد الأنصارى غير الفرج بن فضالة. والفرج بن فضالة قد تكلم فيه بعض أهل الحديث وضعفه من قبل حفظه وقد رواه عنه وكيع وغير واحد من الأئمة. و قال العراقي و المنذري : ضعيف لضعف فرج بن فضالة . و قال الذهبي : منكر ضعفه ابن الجوزي و قال هذا حديث مقطوع فان محمدا لم ير علي بن ابي طالب وقال يحيى الفرج بن فضالة ضعيف قال ابن حبان يقلب الاسانيد ويلزق المتون الواهية بالاسانيد الصحيحة لا يحل الاحتجاج به وقال الدارقطني وقد روى هذا الحديث عبد الرحمن بن سعد بن سعيد عن يحيى بن سعيد وكلاهما غير محفوظ يعني هذا الحديث ولكن له شاهد من حديث أبي هريرة عند الترمذي وعن عائشة أيضا كما ذكره الدارقطني في العلل)


    (13) It is narrated from Ali (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “When my Ummah engages in fifteen actions calamities will befall them.” Thereafter, Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) enumerated all these actions. Amongst them were: “….And they will take singing girls and musical instruments…” (Narrated by At Tirmidhi, Ad Dani, Ibn Abi ad Dunya.)


    (14) حدثنا يحيى بن أيوب، حدثنا سعيد بن أبي مريم، أنا يحيى بن أيوب، عن عبيد الله بن زحر، عن علي بن يزيد، عن القاسم، عن أبي أمامة، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: « ما رفع رجل صوته بعقيرة غناء إلا بعث الله بشيطانين يجلسان على منكبيه يضربان بأعقابهما على صدره حتى يسكت متى ما سكت ». (اخرجه الطبراني في المعجم الكبير و ابو يعلي و ابن ابي الدنيا في ذم الملاهي قال الهيثمي رواه الطبراني بأسانيد ورجال أحدها وثقوا وضعفوا.


    (14) It is narrated from Abi Umamah (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “Never does a person raises his voice to sing except that Allah sends upon him two Shaytaans (devils) who sit on his shoulders and kick his chest with their heals, (They continue kicking him) until he stops, whenever he stops.” (Narrated by At Tabrani, Abu Ya’la, Ibn Abi ad Dunya and others. Haythami said: “At Tabrani has mentioned this hadith with different chains. The narrators of one of the chains are such that some have classified them as reliable, while others weakened them.”)


    (15) حدثنا محمد بن أحمد بن الحسن ، ثنا محمد بن عثمان بن أبي شيبة ، ثنا عبادة بن زياد ، ثنا قيس ، عن عاصم بن بهدلة ، عن أشياخ قومه عن ضرار بن الأزور ، قال : قدمت على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم المدينة فبايعت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ، فأسلمت ثم قلت : تركت الغناء وعزف القيان والخمر أشربها و…… ، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : « ما أبخس الله صفقتك يا ضرار » قال عاصم : وقتل ضرار يوم مسيلمة ورواه سلام أبو المنذر ، عن عاصم ، عن أبي وائل ، عن ضرار مثله حدثناه سليمان بن أحمد ، ثنا محمد بن محمد التمار ، ثنا محمد بن سعيد الأثرم ، ثنا سلام أبو المنذر ، ثنا عاصم ، عن أبي وائل ، عن ضرار ، نحوه (رواه جماعة عن ضرار، منهم: أبو وائل الأسدي عند أحمد وحاكم والطبراني في الكبير و ابن قانع في معجم الصحابة و أبو مروان عند الطبراني أيضا وأبو الحصين بن الزبرقان عند أبي نعيم في معرفة الصحابة وقد رواه ابن عباس رضى الله عنه كما في المستدرك للحاكم )


    (15) Dhiraar bin Al Azwar mentions: “I came to Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), took a pledge and accepted Islam. Thereafter I said: “I abandoned music, (listening to the songs) of slave girls….” Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) replied: “Allah Ta'ala will ensure that your deal is profitable, Oh Dhiraar.” … (Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Nuaim Al Asfahani in his Marifah As Sahabah, Hakim in his Mustadrak, Tabrani in Al Kabeer, Ibn Al Qani’e)


    (16) حدثنا محمد قال : حدثنا الحسين قال : حدثنا عبد الله ، قال : حدثنا عبد الجبار بن عاصم أبو طالب ، قال : حدثنا إسماعيل بن عياش ، عن عبد الرحمن التميمي ، عن عباد بن أبى علي ، عن علي بن أبى طالب ، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال : « يمسخ طائفة من أمتي قردة ، وطائفة خنازير ، ويخسف بطائفة ويرسل على طائفة الريح العقيم بأنهم شربوا الخمر ، ولبسوا الحرير ، واتخذوا القيان ، وضربوا بالدفوف».(خرجه ابن ابي الدنيا في ذم الملاهي)


    (16) It is narrated from Ali (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “Allah will disfigure a group from my Ummah into apes and another group into pigs. He will cause a group to sink (into the earth) and on a group he will send a devastating wind. (All this will be) because they will drink wine, adorn silk, take singing girls and beat the duff (a simple type of drum) (Narrated by Ibn Abi ad Dunya in Dham al malahi)


    (17) حدثنا محمد بن أبان ، نا إسحاق بن وهب ، ثنا حفص بن عمر الإمام ، ثنا هشام الدستوائي ، عن عباد بن أبي علي ، عن شيبة بن المساور ، عن ابن عباس ، « أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم حرم ستة : الخمر ، والميسر ، والمعازف ، والمزامير ، والدف ، والكوبة » « لم يرو هذا الحديث عن شيبة بن المساور إلا عباد بن أبي علي ، ولا عن عباد إلا هشام ، تفرد به : حفص بن عمر » (اخرجه الطبراني في الاوسط قال الهيثمي وفيه محمد بن عمار بن صبيح شيخ البزار ولم أعرفه،وبقية رجاله رجال الصحيح.)


    (17) Ibn Abbas (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) says: “Verily Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has prohibited six things: wine, gambling, music, blowing in the horn, beating the duff and drum” (Narrated by At Tabrani in Al Awsat. Al Haythami said that he did not know one narrator, otherwise all the others are authentic)


    (18) حدثنا محمد بن حفص بن بهمرد ثنا إسحاق بن الحارث الرازي ثنا عمرو بن عبد الغفار الفقيمي ثنا نصير بن أبي الأشعث وشريك وأبو بكر بن عياش عن يزيد بن أبي زياد عن عبد الله بن الحارث بن نوفل عن المطلب بن ربيعة قال، « بينما رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم في بعض اسفاره يسير في بعض الليل إذ سمع صوت غناء فقال ما هذا فنظر فإذا رجل يطارح رجلا للغناء ... لا يزال حواري تلوح عظامه ... ... زوى الحرب عنه أن يجن فيقبرا ... فقال اللهم اركسهما في الفتنة ركسا ودعهما في نار جهنم دعا » لم يرو هذا الحديث عن نصير بن الأشعث إلا عمرو بن عبد الغفار (اخرجه الطبراني في الاوسط قال الهيثمي وفيه جماعة لم أعرفهم)


    (18) Al Muttalib bin Rabiah says: “Whilst Rasullullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) was traveling one night, he heard the sound of someone singing. Rasullullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) enquired as to what was happening. When he looked, he found one person singing while conversing with another person…. Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) prayed: “Oh Allah, throw them into ‘fitnah’ (trails and tribulations) and leave them totally in the fire of hell.” (Narrated by At Tabrani in Al Awsat)


    (19) حدثنا عثمان بن أبي شيبة ، حدثنا جرير ، ومحمد بن فضيل ، عن يزيد بن أبي زياد ، عن سليمان بن عمرو بن الأحوص ، قال : حدثني أبو هلال ، عن أبي برزة ، قال : كنا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في سفر ، فسمع رجلين يتغنيان وأحدهما يقول لصاحبه : يزال حوار ما تزول عظامه زوى الحرب عنه أن يجن فيقبرا قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : « من هذا ؟ » قال : فقيل له فلان وفلان ، قال : فقال : « اللهم أركسهما في الفتنة ركسا، ودعهما في النار دعا » حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة ، حدثنا محمد بن فضيل ، عن يزيد بن أبي زياد ، عن سليمان بن عمرو بن الأحوص ، قال : حدثني رب هذه الدار أبو هلال أنه ، سمع أبا برزة الأسلمي ، يحدث أنهم كانوا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ، فسمعوا غناء فتشوفوا له ، فقام رجل فاستمع ، وذلك قبل أن تحرم الخمر ، فأتاهم ، ثم رجع ، فقال : هذا فلان وفلان ، وهما يتغنيان يجيب أحدهما الآخر ، وهو يقول ، فذكر نحوه (رواه ابو يعلي الموصلي و البزار في مسنده و ابن ابي شيبة في مصنفه و في قول المسدد "قال ابن الجوزي لا يصح يزيد بن أبي زياد كان يلقن بآخره فيتلقن قلت يزيد بن أبي زياد احتج به الأربعة وروى له مسلم مقرونا وقد مر عن الحافظ العسقلاني أنه قال يزيد وإن ضعفه بعضهم من قبل حفظه فلا يلزم أن كل ما يحدث به موضوع قال الجلال السيوطي ما قاله ابن الجوزي لا يقتضي الوضع قال وله شاهد من حديث ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما"و كذا قال الفتني في : تذكرة الموضوعات و حديث ابن عباس اخرجه الطبراني)


    (19) Abi Barza (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) “We were on a journey with Rasullullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) when he heard the sound of two people singing in communication… Rasullullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) enquired as to who they were. When Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) was informed he prayed: “Oh Allah, throw them into ‘fitnah’ (trails and tribulations) and leave them totally in the fire of hell.” (Narrated by At Tabrani in Al Awsat)


    (20) حدثنا أبو عبيدة عبد الوارث بن إبراهيم العسكري، حدثنا سيف بن مسكين الأسواري، حدثنا مبارك بن فضالة، عن الحسن، عن عتي السعدي، قال عتي: خرجت في طلب العلم حتى قدمت الكوفة، فإذا بعبد الله بن مسعود بين ظهراني أهل الكوفة، فسألت عنه فأرشدت إليه …….فقلت: أبا عبد الرحمن، هل للساعة من علم تعرف به الساعة؟ وكان متكئا فاستوى جالسا، فقال: يا سعدي، سألتني عما سألت عنه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قلت: يا رسول الله، هل للساعة من علم تعرف به الساعة؟ فقال لي……… إن من أعلام الساعة وأشراطها أن تظهر المعازف، الحديث (رواه الطبراني في الاوسط و الكبير قال الهيثمي وفيه سيف بن مسكين وهو ضعيف.)


    (20) Ati As Sadi (rahimahullah) said: “I went out in search of knowledge until I came to Kufa where Abdullah bin Masood (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) was leading the people. I enquired of his whereabouts and was directed to him….. (When I reached) I asked: “Oh Abu Abdir Rahman, (Abdullah bin Masoods nickname) Are there any signs of the coming of Qiyamah?” Abdullah bin Masood immediately sat up and replied: “Oh Sadi, I asked that very same question to Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said to me: …… (After enumerating a few signs)...And from the signs of Qiyamah is that musical instruments will become common….” (Narrated by At Tabrani in Al Awsat and Al Kabeer)


    (21) حدثنا أبو القاسم إبراهيم بن الهيثم الناقد ، حدثنا داود بن رشيد ، حدثنا إسماعيل بن عياش ، حدثنا عبد الله بن ميمون ، عن مطر بن سالم ، أن علي بن أبي طالب ، رضي الله عنه قال : « نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن ضرب الدف ولعب الطبل وصوت الزمارة » . (اخرجه الآجري في تحريم النرد والشطرنج)


    (21) Ali (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) mentions: “Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) prohibited the beating of the duff, playing with the drum and the sound of musical instruments.” (Narrated by Al Aajuri in his ‘Tahreem an nird wal khamr’)


    (22) روي عن انس ان رسول الله صلي الله عليه وسلم قال: « إذا ظهر فى أمتى خمسٌ حلَّ عليهم الدمارُ : التلاعنُ والخمرُ والحريرُ والمعازفُ واكتفاءُ الرجالِ بالرجالِ والنساءُ بالنساءِ » . (السيوطي في جمع الجوامع و المتقي الهندي في كنز العمال نقلا عن الحاكم فى التاريخ ، والديلمى عن أنس )


    (22) It is narrated by Anas (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “When five actions become apparent in my Ummah they will become liable for destruction :…..( One of these actions is), music…” (Suyuti and Al Muttaqi Al Hindi mention that this hadith is narrated in At Tarikh of Al Hakim and (also narrated) by Ad Daylami)


    (23) حدثنا يحيى بن عبد الباقي المصيصي، حدثنا اليمان بن سعيد المصيصي، حدثنا الوليد بن عبد الواحد، عن ميسرة بن عبد ربه، عن مغيرة، عن إبراهيم، عن علقمة، عن ابن مسعود، قال: «أوصاني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ….. وأجب دعوة من دعاك من المسلمين ما لم يظهروا المعازف، فإذا أظهروا المعازف فلا تجبهم» ..(اخرجه ابو نعيم في الحلية والطبراني في المعجم الكبير قال الهيثمى : فيه اليمان بن سعيد ضعفه الدارقطنى وغيره .)


    (23) Ibn Masood (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) says: “Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) advised me… (Amongst others), and accept the invitation of any Muslim as long as they do not make apparent any music. And if they do make apparent any music then do not accept their invitation…” (Narrated by Abu Nuaim in Al Hulyah and At Tabrani in Mujam al kabeer)


    (24) روي ان رسول الله صلي الله عليه وسلم قال: « إن أول ما يذهب من هذا الدين الامانة ، وآخر ما يبقى منه الصلاة ، وسيصلى من لا خير فيه ، وما استجاز قوم الزنا إلا استوجبوا حرب الله ورسوله ، ولا ظهرت فيهم المعازف والغناء ، إلا صمت قلوبهم ، ولا ركبوا الزهو والبهاء إلا عميت أبصارهم ، ولا تكبروا إلا حرموا نفع الوحي ، ولا تركوا الامر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر إلا نكست قلوبهم ، حتى لا يعرفون معروفا ، ولا ينكرون منكرا ». (جمع الجوامع و كنز العمال نقلا عن ابن عساكر عن واصل بن عبد الله السلامي عمن حدثه).


    (24) It is narrated that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “Verily the first thing to vanish from this religion is trust…music won’t become common except that their hearts will die…” (Suyuti and Al Muttaqi Al Hindi mention that this hadith is narrated by Ibn Asakir)


    (25) حدثنا قتيبة حدثنا بكر بن مضر عن عبيد الله بن زحر عن على بن يزيد عن القاسم بن عبد الرحمن وهو عبد الرحمن مولى عبد الرحمن عن أبى أمامة عن رسول الله –صلى الله عليه وسلم- قال « لا تبيعوا القينات ولا تشتروهن ولا تعلموهن ولا خير فى تجارة فيهن وثمنهن حرام ». فى مثل ذلك أنزلت عليه هذه الآية (ومن الناس من يشترى لهو الحديث ليضل عن سبيل الله) إلى آخر الآية. اخرجه الترمذي و قال هذا حديث غريب إنما يروى من حديث القاسم عن أبى أمامة. والقاسم ثقة وعلى بن يزيد يضعف فى الحديث قال سمعت محمد بن إسماعيل يقول القاسم ثقة وعلى بن يزيد يضعف. قلت و وجد متابعتا لعلي في الطريق الذي ساقه الحميدى في مسنده قال ثنا سفيان قال حدثنا مطرح أبو المهلب عن عبيد الله بن زحر عن القاسم أبى عبد الرحمن عن أبى أمامة أن رسول الله –صلى الله عليه وسلم- قال :« لا يحل ثمن المغنية ولا بيعها ولا شراؤها ، ولا الاستماع إليها ». و ساقه أبو الفضل السيد أبو المعاطي النوري في المسند الجامع من طريق عاصم ، عن أبى المهلب ، عن عبيد الله الإفريقى , عن أبى أمامة. و قال ليس فيه : علي بن يزيد , ولا القاسم أبي عبد الرحمن.)


    (25) It is narrated from Abi Umamah (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “Do not sell or buy singing girls and do not teach them (songs). There is no good in doing business of them and there income is haram.” (Narrated by Tirmidhi, Humaidi and Abu al FadhlAn Nuri)


    (26) قال البزار في مسانده : حدثنا محمد بن عمارة بن صبيح، ثنا قبيصة، عن سفيان، عن عبدالكريم، عن قيس بن (حَبْتر) عن ابن عباس، عن النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه حرم الميتة والميسر والكوبة- يعني: الطبل- وقال ابن عباس، : كل مسكر حرام» . (نقله البوصيري عن البزار)


    (26) Ibn Abbaas (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) states: “Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has prohibited (the consuming of) carrion, gambling and (beating a) drum” (Al Busairy relates this hadith from Al Bazzaar)


    (27) حدثنا عبدان بن محمد المروزي قال : نا قتيبة بن سعيد قال : نا جعفر بن سليمان الضبعي ، عن سعيد بن أبي رزين ، عن أخيه ، عن ليث ، عن ابن سابط ، عن عائشة ، قالت : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : « إن الله حرم القينة ، وبيعها ، وثمنها ، وتعليمها ، والاستماع إليها » « لم يرو هذا الحديث عن سعيد بن أبي رزين إلا جعفر بن سليمان » (اخرجه ابن ابي الدنيا و الطبراني في المعجم الأوسط و قال الهيثمى: فيه اثنان لم أجد من ذكرهما ، وليث بن أبى سليم وهو مدلس)


    (27) Ayeshah (radiyallâhu ‘anha) states that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “Verily Allah has prohibited singing girls; selling them, their price, teaching them and listening to them.” (Narrated by Ibn Abi ad Dunya and At Tabrani)


    (28) حدثنا محمد بن النضر الأزدي قال : نا بشر بن الوليد قال : نا سليمان بن داود اليمامي ، عن يحيى بن أبي كثير ، عن أبي سلمة ، عن أبي هريرة ، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : « والذي بعثني بالحق لا تنقضي الدنيا حتى يقع بهم الخسف ، والمسخ ، والقذف » . قالوا : ومتى ذاك يا نبي الله ؟ قال : « إذا رأيت النساء ركبن السروج ، وكثرت القينات ، وشهد بشهادات الزور ، وشرب المصلون في آنية أهل الشرك : الذهب والفضة ، واستغنى الرجال بالرجال ، والنساء بالنساء ، فاستدفروا واستعدوا » ، وأومأ بيده فوضعها على جبهته يستر وجهه (رواه الطبراني في المعجم الأوسط قال الهيثمي وفيه سليمان بن داود اليمامي وهو متروك)


    (28) Abu Hurairah (radiyallâhu ‘anha) states that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “By the oath of that being in whose control is my life, this world will not terminate until sinking, disfigurement and raining of stones does not take place.” Sahabah (radiyallâhu ‘anhum) asked: “When will this take place, oh Nabi of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)?” Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) replied: “When you see women riding camels, and singing girls become common…” He thereafter signalled with his hand on his forehead and covered his face.” (Narrated by At Tabrani in Al Mujam al awsat)


    (29) حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد بن ناجية ، ثنا عباد بن يعقوب ، ثنا موسى بن عمير ، عن جعفر بن محمد ، عن أبيه ، عن جده ، عن علي قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : « بعثت بكسر المزامير ، وأقسم ربي لا يشرب عبد في الدنيا خمرا إلا سقاه الله يوم القيامة حميما ، معذبا بعد أو مغفورا له » ثم قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : « كسب المغنية والمغني حرام ، وكسب الزانية سحت ، وحق على الله أن لا يدخل الجنة بدنا نبت من السحت » (الفوائد الشهير بالغيلانيات لأبي بكر الشافعي)


    (29) Ali (radiyallâhu ‘anha) states that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “I was sent to break flutes …,” Thereafter Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “The earnings of a singing male and female are haraam…” (Abu Bakr As Shafi in Al Ghailaniyyaat)


    (30) حدثنا سليمان بن أحمد ، ثنا محمد بن الفضل السقطي ، ثنا عبد العزيز بن عبد الله الأويسي ، ثنا يزيد بن عبد الملك النوفلي ، عن يزيد بن خصيفة ، عن السائب بن يزيد ، عن عمر بن الخطاب ، رضي الله عنه ، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : « ثمن القينة سحت ، وغناؤها حرام ، والنظر إليها حرام ، وثمنها مثل ثمن الكلب ، وثمن الكلب سحت ، فمن نبت لحمه على السحت فالنار أولى به » (معرفة الصحابة لأبي نعيم الأصبهاني)


    (30) Umar (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) states that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has said: “The wages of a singing slave girl is illegal, her singing is haram, and to look at her is totally forbidden…” (Marifah as Sahabah of Abu Nuaim Al Isbahani)


    VERDICTS OF SAHABAH AND TABIEEN


    Mentioned above were a few Ahadith related from Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). Read on further to see the views of a few senior Sahabah and Tabieen (radiyallâhu ‘anhum ajma’een).


    NOTE- Many of the following statements are also in the category of marfoo (being transmitted from Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). This is because it is not possible for the human mind to produce any of these verdicts. It is inevitable that the Sahabah heard these from Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). Therefore, Muhaddithoon give it the same status as marfoo.


    أخبرنا أبو الحسين بن بشران أنبأنا الحسين بن صفوان حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد بن أبى الدنيا حدثنا أبو خيثمة وعبيد الله بن عمر قالا حدثنا غندر عن شعبة عن الحكم عن حماد عن إبراهيم قال قال عبد الله بن مسعود : الغناء ينبت النفاق فى القلب كما ينبت الماء الزرع » (اخرج ابو داود الحصة الاولي مرفوعا و اخرجه عبد الرزاق وا بن ابي شيبة و معمر بن راشد مقطوعا علي ابراهيم و رواه ا بن الخلال في الامر بالمعروف عن احمد و في السنة موقوفا علي ابن مسعود و مقطوعا علي ابراهيم ورواه ابن نصر المروزي في تعظيم قدر الصلوة موقوفا علي ابن مسعود مقطوعا علي الشعبي أخرجه الديلمي عن أنس وأبي هريرة وقال ابن الغرس عزاه الغزالي للفضيل بن عياض ورواه البيهقي مرفوعا و موقوفا علي ابن مسعود ووقفه علي ابن مسعود ابن البطة في الابانة الكبري و ابن ابي الدنيا في ذم الملاهي و ابن صصرى فى أماليه وكذا نسبه القاسم بن سلام الهروي الي ابن مسعود في الايمان وقال ابن طاهر : أصح الأسانيد في ذلك أنه من قول إبراهيم ورجال ابي داود كلهم ثقات غير شيخ ( سلام ) الذي لم يسم ، فهومجهول . وقال العراقى : رفعه غير صحيح لأن فى إسناده من لم يسم . و قال البيهقي :" و قد روي هذا مسندا بإسناد غير قوي " و اختار ابن القيم في " إغاثة اللهفان " انه موقوف .


    Abdullah bin Masood (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) has said: “Verily music causes hypocrisy to grow in the heart as water causes plants to grow”.(Bayhaqi, Abu Bakr bin Khilaal in As Sunnah, Ibn Nasr al Marwazy in Tazeem qadr as salaah, Ibn al Batta, Ibn Abi ad Dunya in Dhamm al malahi, Ibn Sasri and others.)


    Numerous Scholars opine that the above statement is a statement of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). However, even if we accept it as a statement of Abdullah bin Masood (radiyallâhu ‘anhu), it will still be on the same status of the proclamations of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) since a statement of this kind cannot possibly be made up by the human mind. Also, keep in mind the following hadith of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)


    وما حدثكم ابن مسعود فصدقوه »(اخرجه احمد و الترمذي و قال. هذا حديث حسن)


    ((“Believe and accept whatever Ibn Masood tells you!!”)) (Narrated by Ahmad and Tirmidhi with a good chain)


    قال مسدد : حدثنا أبو عوانة ، عن أبي هاشم ، عن ابن عباس ، رضي الله عنه قال : « الكوبة حرام ، والدف حرام ، والمعازف حرام ، والمزامير حرام » ( البيهقي في الكبري و ابن حجر العسقلاني في المطالب العالية للحافظ)


    Ibn Abbaas (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) states: “The drum is prohibited, the duff [also pronounced as daff; the first is more eloquent) is prohibited, musical instruments are prohibited and flutes are prohibited” (Al Bayhaqi, Al Mutalib al aaliyah li Ibn Hajar)


    حدثنا عمران بن بكار قال : ، ثنا أبو المغيرة عبد القدوس بن الحجاج قال : ، ثنا صفوان بن عمرو عن سوارة بن عبد الله بن الحجاج : أنهم نزلوا بعبد الرحمن الجندي فذكروا الطلا فقال ابن الجندي : كنت شابا جاهلا أحب هذا الشراب وأنا لازم للنضر بن أبي العلاء عبد الأعلى بن هلال يغشاني وأغشاه فأتيت منزل النضر فجعلت أدعوه فسمعني عبد الله بن بسر صاحب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو في أسفل منزل النضر فقال : يا ابن الجندي قلت : لبيك يا أبا صفوان قال : « إني رأيتك لزمت هذا الغلام ولزمك على ما شاء الله ، إياك أن تستفتح باب أهلك ولك فرطوس كفرطوس الخنزير أو خطم كخطم القرد ، والله ليمسخن قوم وإنهم لفي شرب الخمر وضرب المعازف حتى يكونوا قردة وخنازير » (رواه الدولابي في الكنى والأسماء)


    Abdullah bin Busr (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) has said: “…By the oath of Allah, a group of people will be disfigured whilst they are drinking wine and playing with musical instruments until they become like apes and swines” (Narrated by Ad Dulabi in Al Kuna wal Asmaa)


    حدثنا محمد بن عبدة المصيصي ، ثنا أبو توبة ، ثنا معاوية بن سلام ، عن زيد بن سلام ، حدثني عدي بن أرطاة ، أن عوف بن مالك ، خرج من دمشق إلى بعض قريات بني فزارة إلى صديق كان له فيها ، فاجتمع إليه نفر ، فجعلوا يتحدثون ، فقال رجل : من يذكرون من أصحاب الدجال من هذه الأمة ؟ فقال عوف بن مالك : « قوم يستحلون الخمر والحرير والمعازف حتى يقاتلون معكم ، فينصرون كما تنصرون ، ويرزقون ، حتى يوشك قاتلهم أن تقول : فعل الله بأولنا كذا وكذا ، لو كان حراما ما نصرنا ولا رزقنا ، حتى إذا خرج الدجال لحقوا به ، لا يتمالكون عنه ، يخرجهم إليه أعمالهم » (رواه الطبراني مسند الشاميين)


    Adi bin Artaar (rahimahullah) narrates that Auf bin Malik emerged from Damascus heading to a village of Bani Fazarah to visit a friend of his who resided therein. A group of people gathered around him and a discussion ensued. A person enquired: “Who can mention something regarding the followers of Dajjaal.” Auf bin Malik (rahimahullah) replied: “They will be a group who regard wine, silk and music as permissible…” (Tabrani narrated it in Musnad Shamiyyeen)


    حدثنا احمد بن اسحاق نا عبدالله بن سليمان نا المسيب بن واضح عن أبي إسحاق الفزاري عن الأوزاعي قال كتب عمر بن عبدالعزيز الى عمر ابن الوليد كتابا فيه وقسم لك أبوك الخمس كله وإنما لك سهم أبيك كسهم رجل من المسلمين وفيه حق الله والرسول وذي القربى واليتامى والمساكين وابن السبيل فما أكثر خصماء أبيك يوم ا لقيامة فكيف ينجو من كثر خصماؤه وإظهارك المعازف والمزامير بدعة في الاسلام لقد هممت أن أبعث اليك من يجز جمتك جمة السوء قال وكان عمر بن عبدالعزيز يجعل كل يوم درهما من خاصة ماله في طعام المسلمين ثم يأكل معهم (اخرجه النسائ رابو نعيم في حلية الأولياء و هذا سنده صحيح)


    Auzai (rahimahullah) mentioned: “Umar bin Abd Azeez wrote to Umar bin Waleed: “…and musical instruments is an innovation in Islam…” (Narrated by An Nasai and Abu Nuaim and the chain of narrators is extremely authentic)


    أخبرنا أبو الحسين بن بشران ، أنا إسماعيل الصفار ، نا الحسين بن علي بن عفان ، نا ابن نمير ، عن الأعمش ، قال : قال عبد الله : « لا ألفين أحدكم يستلقي على ظهره ، ثم يرفع إحدى رجليه على الأخرى ، ثم يرفع عقيرته الغناء ويدع القرآن » (البيهقي في شعب الإيمان)


    Abdullah bin Masood (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) has said: “I should not find any of you lying on his back with one leg over the other raising his voice in songs and abandoning the Quran” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)


    قال : وأنا الحسين ، نا عبد الله بن أبي الدنيا ، حدثني أبي ، وأحمد بن منيع ، نا مروان بن شجاع ، عن عبد الكريم الجزري قال : « إذا رأيتم الرجل قد هجر المسجد ، وعكف على الغناء والشراب ، فلا تسألوا عنه » ( رواه البيهقي في شعب الإيمان )


    Abdul Kareem Al Jazari (rahimahullah) mentions: “When you see a person abandoned the Masjid, and spends his time on music and wine, then don’t even ask about him” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)


    أخبرنا أبو الحسين بن بشران ، أنا الحسين بن صفوان ، نا عبد الله بن محمد ، حدثني الحصين بن عبد الرحمن قال : قال الفضيل بن عياض : « الغناء رقية الزنى » ( رواه البيهقي في شعب الإيمان )


    Fuzail bin Ayaaz (rahimahullah) has said: “Music is the catalyst of zina” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)


    أخبرنا أبو الحسين ، أنا الحسين بن صفوان ، نا عبد الله بن أبي الدنيا ، حدثني إبراهيم بن محمد الرفدي ، عن أبي عثمان الليثي قال : قال يزيد بن الوليد الناقض : « يا بني أمية ، إياكم والغناء ، فإنه ينقص الحياء ، ويزيد في الشهوة ، ويهدم المروءة ، وإنه لينوب عن الخمر ، ويفعل ما يفعل السكر ، فإن كنتم لا بد فاعلين ، فجنبوه النساء إن الغناء داعية الزنى »(البيهقي في شعب الإيمان)


    Yazeed bin Waleed An Naqidh (rahimahullah) has advised: “Oh Bani Ummayah, save yourselves from music, because it will decrease your modesty, increases your lust and demolishes your morality. It will cause you to incline to wine and cause you to do what a drunken person does. If (as a last resort) you really have to listen to music then, at least save your womenfolk from it for verily music leads to fornication.” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in Shuab al Iman)


    وقال سعيد بن المسيب : إني لأبغض الغناء ، وأحب الرجز(البغوي في شرح السنة)


    Saeed bin Al Musayyab (rahimahullah) claimed: “Verily I hate music and I love ‘rajaz’ (name of a poetical meter)” (Al Baghwi in Sharh as Sunnah)


    وأخبرنا أبو الحسين بن بشران أنبأنا الحسين بن صفوان حدثنا ابن أبى الدنيا حدثنا عبيد الله بن عمر وأبو خيثمة قالا حدثنا يحيى بن سليم عن عبيد الله بن عمر قال : سأل إنسان القاسم بن محمد عن الغناء فقال أنهاك عنه وأكرهه قال أحرام هو؟ قال : انظر يا ابن أخى إذا ميز الله الحق من الباطل فى أيهما يجعل الغناء. (اخرجه البيهقى في سننه)


    A person asked Qasim bin Muhammad (rahimahullah) concerning music. Qasim bin Muhammad (rahimahullah) replied: “I forbid you from it (and let me tell you) I really abhor it.” The questioner asked: “Is it haraam?” Qasim bin Muhammad (rahimahullah) replied: “Oh my nephew, if Allah had to separate truth from falsehood in which category would you put music?” (Narrated by Al Bayhaqi in his Sunan)


    أخبرني محمد بن أبي هارون ، أن إسحاق ، حدثهم قال : سألت أبا عبد الله عن الرجل ، يكسر الطبل ، أو الطنبور ، أو مسكرا ، عليه في ذلك شيء ؟ قال أبو عبد الله : « اكسر هذا كله ، وليس يلزمك شيء » (رواه أبو بكر بن الخلال الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر )


    Ishaq (rahimahullah) stated: “I asked Abu Abdillah concerning a person who breaks a drum, mandolin or (pours out ) the wine of another person, is there any compensation compulsory upon him?” Abu Abdillah replied: “You should destroy all of these and nothing will be compulsory upon you!” (Narrated by Abu Bakr bin Al Hilaal in Al Amr bil Maroof)


    قال الحسن : « ليس الدف من سنة المسلمين في شيء » (رواه ابن ابي الدنيا في ذم الملاهي )


    Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) mentioned: “The duff is not from the sunnats of Muslims in any way” (Ibn Abi ad Dunya in Dhamm al malahi)


    أخبرنا عبد الرزاق عن الثوري عن أبي قاسم عن إبراهيم أنه كره أجر النواحة والمغنية. (البخاري و مصنف عبد الرزاق و مصنف ابن ابي شيبة)


    Abi al Qasim narrates that Ibrahim (rahimahullah) abhorred the income of mourners and singers. (Bukhari ,Musannaf Abd ar Razzaq, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah)


    حدثنا أبو بكر قال حدثنا عبدة ووكيع عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد عن الشعبي أنه كره أجر المغنية ، زاد فيه عبدة : وقال ما أحب أن آكله. (مصنف ابن أبي شيبة)


    Abu Khalid narrates that Shabi detested the wages of a singing girl. (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah)


    حدثنا أبو بكر قال حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن عمرو عن الحسن أنه كره أجر النائحة والمغنية.


    Amr narrates that Hasan did not like the earnings of a mourner and a singer. (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah)


    حدثنا محمد ، قال : حدثنا الحسين ، قال : حدثنا عبد الله ، قال : حدثنا عبد الصمد بن يزيد ، قال : قال رافع بن حفص المدني : « أربعة لا ينظر الله عز وجل إليهم يوم القيامة : الساحرة ، والنائحة ، والمغنية ، والمرأة مع المرأة ، وقال : من أدرك ذلك الزمان فأولى به طول الحزن » (ذم الملاهي)


    Rafi bin Hafs Al Madani states: “Allah won’t look at four people on the day of Qiyamah…(one of them is).. a singer” (Dhamm al Malahi)


    أخبرنا محمد بن عبد الصمد المقريء المصيصي ، حدثنا أبو نعيم الحلبي ، حدثنا مروان بن معاوية ، حدثنا أبو يزيد ، قال : سمعت مكحولا ، يقول : « من مات وعنده مغنية لم يصل عليه » (الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر لأبي بكر بن الخلال)


    Abu Yazeed says: “I heard Makhool say: “Whoever dies and has a singing girl in his possession, no salaah (janazah) will be prayed on him.” (Al Amr bil maroof of Abu Bakr Al Khalal)


    وقد قال كثير من السلف ، منهم : قتادة : الشيطان قرآنه الشعر ، ومؤذنه المزمار، ومصايده النساء .

    وروي ذلك من حديث أبي أمامة - مرفوعا . (فتح الباري لابن رجب)


    Qatada (rahimahullah) has said: “The devils Quran is poetry, his Muadhin is musical instruments and his net is women.” (Fath Al Bari of Ibn Hajar)


    قال الشوكاني : فذهب الجمهور إلى التحريم (عون المعبود)


    Shawkani (rahimahullah) claimed: “The vast majority of Scholars were of the opinion that music is forbidden.” (Aun al mabood)


    وذهب جمهور الأئمة وأهل المذاهب الأربعة إلى التحريم ( العرف الشذي للكشميري)


    Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri (rahimahullah) asserted, “The vast majority of Ulama including Scholars from all four Madhabs maintained that music is forbidden.” (Al Arf as shadhi)


    حدثنا ابن فضيل عن الحسن بن عبيد الله عن معاذ العمي عن شريح أنه سمع صوت دف فقال : الملائكة لا يدخلون بيتا فيه دف. (مصنف ابن أبي شيبة)


    Muaaz Al Ammi (rahimahullah) said: “When Shurai (rahimahullah) heard the sound of a duff he remarked: “Verily the Angels do not enter a house in which there is a duff” (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaibah)


    حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد وابن مهدي عن سفيان عن عمران بن سلمة قال : قال لي خيثمة : أنا سمعت سويدا يقول : لا تدخل الملائكة بيتا فيه دف.


    Imraan bin Salimah (rahimahullah) mentioned: “Khaithamah (rahimahullah) said to me that he heard Suwaid (rahimahullah) saying: “Verily the Angels do not enter a house in which there is a duff” (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaibah)



    Below we have cited the Fataawaa (verdicts) of Scholars from all four Madhaaib. You may notice that in each madhab, references have also been given from the most authoritive works (in that particular madhab).


    HANAFI MADHAB


    وهو نظير اختلافهم فيمن أتلف على غيره شيئا من المعازف فأبو يوسف ومحمد رحمهما الله تعالى قالا فعله أمر بالمعروف ، ونهي عن المنكر (المبسوط)


    “An example of this is their difference on a person who destroys the musical instruments of another person; Imam Abu Yusuf and Muhammad opine that a person won’t be responsible because his action is inviting towards good and forbidding evil.” (Al Mabsoot)


    وقال أبو يوسف ومحمد والشافعي ومالك وأحمد لا يضمن (عمدة القاري شرح صحيح البخاري)


    “Imam Abu Yusuf, Imam Muhammad, Imam Shafi, Imam Malik and Imam Ahmad were of the opinion the (if a person breaks the musical instruments of another person) he would not be responsible. Nor is it permissible to sell any of these items. (Umdah al Qari)


    لأن الفتوى على قولهما في عدم الضمان بكسر المعازف . (رد المحتار)


    “(It is mentioned in Bahr) …The fatwa is on the opinion of Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad that a person will not be responsible for breaking the musical instruments of another person” (Radd al muhtaar)


    ونظيره كراهة بيع المعازف ؛ لأن المعصية تقام بها عينها(رد المحتار)


    “An example of it is the prohibition of selling musical instruments, because sin is done with it directly” (Radd al muhtaar)


    ( قوله : وأصل هذا اختلافهم في كسر المعازف ) أي فإنه لا ضمان فيه عندهما ؛ لأنه آمر بالمعروف ناه عن المنكر ، (تبيين الحقائق شرح كنز الدقائق(


    “This difference is based on their difference in breaking someone else’s musical items, Imam Abu Yusuf and Muhammad opine that a person will not be responsible because his action is inviting towards good and forbidding evil.” (Tabyeen al haqaaiq)


    قال في شرح الطحاوي ولا قطع على سارق الملاهي كالدف والطبل والمزمار وغيرها لأنه لا ضمان على كاسرها عند أبي يوسف ومحمد فأوجب قصورا في ماليتها فصار ذلك شبهة في عدم القطع وقال في الفتاوى الولوالجي رجل سرق طبلا للغزاة وهو يساوي عشرة تكلموا فيه والمختار أنه لا يقطع لأنه كما يصلح للغزو يصلح للهو فتمكنت الشبهة .( تبيين الحقائق شرح كنز الدقائق)


    “It is mentioned in the Sharh of Tahawi that the hand of a person who steals any musical instrument won’t be cut because there is no responsibility on the person who breaks it according to Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad. This necessitates that musical instruments do not have any value. It is because of this neglect that his (the person who steals musical instruments) hand wont be cut. It is mentioned in Fatawa al Walwalijiyyah that Ulama differ on the ruling of a person who steals the drum of warriors that is equivalent to the value of ten dirhams. The preferred view is that such a person’s hand won’t be cut because just as that drum could be used for war; it could also be used for futility. So there’s a doubt (therefore his hand wont be cut).” (Tabyeen al haqaaiq)


    وروي عن عبد الله بن عمر أنه رأى في يد بعض الناس شيئا من المعازف فكسره في رأسه ثم قال الفقيه أبو الليث ، وهذا الذي حكي أن أبا يوسف ومحمدا قالا إنه لا ضمان عليه في الدف والطبل إذا كان للهو (تبيين الحقائق شرح كنز الدقائق)


    “It is narrated from Abdullah bin Umar that when he saw musical instruments in the hands of a person he took it and broke it on that persons head. Faqih Abu Laith mentions that this is mentioned from Imam Abu Yusuf and Muhammad that a person will not be responsible if he breaks the musical instruments of another person if it was for ‘lahw’.” (Tabyeen al haqaaiq)


    ونظير هذا الاختلاف الاختلاف في كسر المعازف ) ، فإنه لا ضمان فيه عندهما لأنه آمر بالمعروف ناه عن المنكر . (العناية شرح الهداية)


    “An example of this difference is the difference regarding a person who breaks the musical instruments of another person; Imam Abu Yusuf and Muhammad opine that a person won’t be responsible because his action is inviting towards good and forbidding evil.” (Al Inaayah)


    ( ولا دف ولا طبل ولا مزمار ) لأن هذه معازف قد ندب إلى كسرها ، والمراد بالطبل طبل اللهو أما طبل الغزاة ففيه اختلاف ، والمختار أنه لا قطع فيه أيضا . (الجوهرة النيرة)


    “(And a person wont be responsible for breaking) any musical item because it is preferable to break these items. The meaning of a drum is that drum which is used for entertainment. As for a drum which is used for war there is difference of opinion; the preferred view is that in this case also a persons hand will not be cut.” (Al Jawharah an nayyirah)


    وفي السراج: ودلت المسألة أن الملاهي كلها حرام، ويدخل عليهم بلا إذنهم لانكار المنكر.قال ابن مسعود: صوت اللهو والغناء ينبت النفاق في القلب كما ينبت الماء النبات.قلت: وفي البزازية: استماع صوت الملاهي كضرب قصب ونحوه حرام لقوله عليه الصلاة والسلام: استماع الملاهي معصية والجلوس عليها فسق والتلذذ بها كفر أي بالنعمة، فصرف الجوارح إلى غير ما خلق لاجله كفر بالنعمة لا شكر، فالواجب كل الواجب أن يجتنب كي لا يسمع، لما روي أنه عليه الصلاة والسلام أدخل أصبعه في أذنه عند سماعه وأشعار العرب لو فيها ذكر الفسق تكره اه.(الدر المختار برد المحتار)


    “It is mentioned in As Siraj: “…and this masala (leaving from an invitation in which there is music) alludes to the impermissibility of all futile actions. Therefore, a person can enter without permission to refute their wrong.” Ibn Masood said: “The sound of Vain talk and music causes hypocrisy to grow in the heart as water causes plants to grow.” In Al Bazazia it is mentioned: “To listen to music like a pipe etc is haram because of what is (attributed to) Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) “To listen to music is a sin; to sit for it is fisq and to derive pleasure from it is kufr” Using the limbs for actions other than why Allah created is ingratitude to his bounties, SO IT IS COMPULSORY TO STAY AWAY (FROM SUCH INVITATIONS) SO THAT HE DOES NOT HEAR ANY MUSIC, as narrated that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) placed his fingers in his ears when he passed by music. As for Arabic poetry, if it has fisq, it would be makrooh.” (Ad Durr al muhtaar with Radd al muhtaar)


    وإن كان هناك لعب وغناء قبل أن يحضرها فلا يحضرها ؛ لأنه لا يلزمه إجابة الدعوة إذا كان هناك منكر . (تبيين الحقائق شرح كنز الدقائق)


    “And if there is futile play and music at a invitation (which he knows of) before the attending then he should not attend, because it is not compulsory to accept an invitation if there is vice” (Tabyeen al Haqaaiq)


    قال أبو يوسف : في داره يسمع مزامير ومعازف أدخل عليهم بغير إذنهم لا أمنع الناس عن إقامة هذا الفرض (البحر الرائق شرح كنز الدقائق)


    “Imam Abu Yusuf has said: “If a person hears music in someone’s house he can enter without permission (to stop this wrong). I won’t stop people from fulfilling this obligation (of preventing evil)” (Al Bahr ar raiq)


    فأما إذا كان الدخول لتغيير المنكر بأن سمع في دار صوت المزامير والمعازف فليدخل عليهم بغير إذنهم لأن تغيير المنكر فرض. ( بدائع الصنائع في ترتيب الشرائع )


    “If a person hears music at someone’s house and intends to change this wrong, he could enter with no consent because changing a wrong is compulsory.” (Badaai as Sanaai)


    ألا ترى أنه يكره بيع المعازف (الهداية)





    “Don’t you see that it is forbidden to sell musical instruments?” (Al Hedayah)


    ونظيره كراهة بيع المعازف ؛ لأن المعصية تقام بها عينها ، (رد المحتار)


    “And the example of this is the prohibition of selling musical instruments, because evil is carried out with it directly.” (Radd al muhtaar)


    الأول الكلام في الغناء قال القرطبي أما الغناء فلا خلاف في تحريمه لأنه من اللهو واللعب المذموم بالاتفاق فأما ما يسلم من المحرمات فيجوز القليل منه في الأعراس والأعياد وشبههما ومذهب أبي حنيفة تحريمه وبه يقول أهل العراق ومذهب الشافعي كراهته وهو المشهور من مذهب مالك (عمدة القاري شرح صحيح البخاري)


    Allamah Badr ad Deen Al Ayni (rahimahullah) mentions: “The first thing we will discuss is with regards to singing. Qurtubi (rahimahullah) stated: “There is no difference of opinion on its prohibition because it is a futile pursuit and a contemptible amusement. As for those which are free from impermissible items, a little of it is permissible on weddings, eid etc. AND THE MADHAB OF IMAM ABU HANIFAH IS THAT IT IS IMPERMISSIBLE, AND THIS IS THE OPINION OF ALL THE SCHOLARS OF IRAQ, and the madhab of As Shafi is that it is disliked and this is the famous opinion of the Maliki madhab.” (Umdah al Qari)


    وأما الدف الذي يضرب في زماننا مع الصنجات والجلاجلات فمكروه بلا خلاف (عمدة القاري شرح صحيح البخاري و مرقاة المفاتيح)


    Allamah Badr ad Deen Al Ayni (rahimahullah) says in another place: “As for the duff common in our times which has castanets and bells, they are makrooh with no difference of opinion.” (Umdah al Qari and Mirqaat al mafateeh) Allamah Badr ad deen passed away in 855 (AH)


    قيل الغناء رقية الزنا وقال الشافعي ولو كان يديم الغناء ويغشاه المغنون معلنا فهذا سفه يرد شهادته وإن كان يقل لا ترد شهادته وقال النووي في الروضة غناء الإنسان بمجرد صوته مكروه وسماعه مكروه وإن كان سماعه من الأجنبية كان أشد كراهة والغناء بآلات مطربة هو من شعار شاربي الخمر كالعود والطنبور والصنج والمعازف وسائر الأوتار حرام وكذا سماعه حرام وفي اليراع الوجهان صحح البغوي الحرمة (مرقاة المفاتيح شرح مشكاة المصابيح)


    Mullah Ali Qarie (rahimahullah) mentions: “It is said that music is the path to fornication. Imam Shafi (rahimahullah) has ruled that if a person persists on (listening to) music and he is surrounded by singers (in our times, music cds etc) then this is such an act of stupity which will cause his testimony to be rejected (in the court of law). But if he hears seldomnly, then his testimony won’t be rejected. And An Nawawi (rahimahullah) says in ‘Ar Raudha’: “For a person to sing merely with his voice with no instruments is detestable and to hear it is makrooh. And if he is hearing from a strange woman, it will be even more detestable. And singing songs with any instrument is a quality of those who drink wine and it is haram. As for the reed there are two opinions; Al Baghwi (rahimahullah) has preferred that it is also forbidden.” (Mirqaat al mafatih)


    وفي فتاوى قاضيخان استماع صوت الملاهي كالضرب بالقضيب ونحو ذلك حرام ومعصية لقوله عليه الصلاة والسلام استماع الملاهي معصية والجلوس عليها فسق والتلذذ بها من الكفر(مرقاة المفاتيح شرح مشكاة المصابيح)


    In fatawa Qazi Khan (it is mentioned): “To listen to any musical instrument like the pipe etc is forbidden and a sin because of what (is attributed) to Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam): “To listen to music is a sin; to sit for it is fisq and to derive pleasure from it is kufr” (Mirqaat al mafateeh (



    MALIKI MADHAB


    والراجح أن الدف و الكبر جائزان لعرس مع كراهة الكراء وأن المعازف حرام كالجميع في غير نكاح فيحرم كراؤها. (الشرح الكبير للشيخ الدردير)


    “And the preferred view is that a duff and ‘kabar’ (a drum which is close on only one side-Lisan al Arab) are both permissible for marriage but it is detestable to hire them out. All types of musical instruments are forbidden out of marriage hence, it is forbidden to hire it out.” (As Sharh al kabeer by Shaykh Dardeer)


    لا ينبغي إجارة الدف والمعازف كلها في العرس ، وكره ذلك مالك وضعفه .قال ابن يونس : يريد ضعف قول من يجيز ذلك .ابن يونس : وأما الدف الذي أبيح ضربه في العرس ونحوه فينبغي أن تجوز إجارته (التاج والإكليل لمختصر خليل)


    “It is inappropriate to hire out a duff and all musical instruments for a wedding, Imam Malik detested that and weakened the opinion -Ibn Yunus says: “The meaning is he weakened the opinion of those who say it is permissible.”-Ibn Yunus also said: “As for the duff since it is permissible to beat it on a wedding, it should be permissible to hire it out.”(At Taj al ikleel li mukhtasar al khaleel)


    وهو قول مالك في المدونة إنه كره الدفاف والمعازف في العرس وغيره . (مواهب الجليل في شرح مختصر الشيخ خليل)


    “The opinion of Imam Malik which is mentioned in Al Mudawwanah is that it is detestable to hire out the duff at weddings and other occasions.” (Mawaahib al Jaleel)


    والمعنى أن مالكا كره كراء ما ذكر للأعراس ولا يلزم من إباحة ضرب الدف في العرس إباحة إجارته فيه ، وأما إجارة المعزف في غير الأعراس فإنه لا يجوز. (شرح مختصر خليل للخرشي)


    “And the meaning is that Imam Malik disliked that a duff be hired out for nikah. It is not necessary that it be permissible to hire it out because of the permissibility of beating it (at weddings). As for other musical instruments it is totally not permissible to hire it on occasions besides nikah.” (Sharh Mukhtasar Al Khaleel of Al Kharshi)


    ( و ) كره ( كراء دف ) بضم الدال وقد تفتح ، وهو المدور المغشي من جهة كالغربال ( ، ومعزف ) واحد المعازف قال الجوهري المعازف الملاهي فيشمل المزمار والأعواد والسنطير بناء على كراهتها ( لعرس ) أي نكاح وقيل هي جائزة في النكاح ، ولا يلزم من جوازها جواز كرائها. (حاشية الدسوقي على الشرح الشرح الكبير)


    “It is abominable to hire out a duff…and musical instuments …on weddings ...and it is said that it is permissible for weddings, however the permissibility of beating it does not necessitate the permissibility of hiring it out.” (Haashiyyah of Dasooqi on Al Sharh al Kabeer)


    ( قوله : وأن المعازف حرام ) أي في العرس خلافا لمن قال بكراهتها فيه ولمن قال بجوازها فيه ( قوله : كالجميع ) أي الدف والكبر والمعازف أي كما يحرم الجميع فتحصل أن الدف والكبر في النكاح فيهما قولان الجواز والكراهة ، وفي المعازف ثلاثة أقوال بزيادة الحرمة ، وهو أرجحها فتكون إجارتها في النكاح حراما ، وأما في غير النكاح فالحرمة في الجميع قولا واحدا وقوله : في غير النكاح يشمل العقيقة والختان والقدوم من سفر ونحوه . .     “And all musical instruments (duff, drums etc) are haram meaning) on weddings in contrast to those who say it’s abominable or even permissible. The result is that there are two views regarding a duff and kabar in a wedding; permissibility and detestability, and there are three opinions regarding musical instruments, the preferred view is that it is haram therefore hiring it out even for nikaah would not be permissible. As for occasions besides nikah like for Aqeeqah, returning from a journey etc, there is only one opinion (i.e. there is consensus) that it is haraam.” (Haashiyyah of Dasooqi on Al Sharh al Kabeer)


    وخلاصته أن المعتمد حرمة استماع الآلة فيحرم الاستئجار عليها . . (شرح مختصر خليل للخرشي)


    “In short, the preferred view is that it is forbidden to listen to musical instruments, therefore it will be impermissible to hire it out.” (Sharh Mukhtasar Al Khaleel of Al Kharshi)


    حاصله أن الدف والكبر في النكاح فيه قولان الجواز والكراهة ، وفي المعازف ثلاثة أقوال بزيادة الحرمة وهو أرجحها ، وأما في غير النكاح فالحرمة في الجميع قولا واحدا ولو كان في عقيقة أو ختان أو حج أو قدوم من سفر حاشية الصاوي على الشرح الصغير - (ج 9 / ص 20)


    “In short, there are two views regarding a duff and kabar in weddings; permissibility and detestability, and there are three opinions regarding musical instruments, the preferred view is that it is haraam. As for occasions besides nikah like for Aqeeqah, haj, returning from a journey etc, there is only one opinion (i.e. there is consensus) that it is haraam.” (Haashiyyah of As Sawi on Al Sharh al Sagheer)


    تركه خير من فعله فهما مكروهان ، وهو قول مالك رضي الله عنه في المدونة أكره الدفاف والمعازف في العرس وغيره . (منح الجليل شرح مختصر خليل)


    “Abandoning it is better than carrying it out. Thus, both are detested and this is the opinion of Imam Malik which is mentioned in Al Mudawwanah (that he said): “I hate the duff and musical instruments on weddings and other occasions.” (Manh Al Jaleel)


    ولا يحل لك ........ ولا سماع شئ من الملاهي والغناء، (رسالة القيرواني)


    “And it is not permissible for you to…..listen to futility and music. (Risalah Al Qiranwi)


    المازري : الغناء لا بآلة عندنا مكروه .قال ابن عبد الحكم : من أدمن على سماع غناء ردت شهادته فيمكن أنه رآه علما على سقوط المروءة .ومن المدونة قال مالك : ترد شهادة المغني والمغنية والنائحة إن عرفوا بذلك بشرط اشتهارهم بذلك ، والاشتهار بذلك يدل على الخساسة . (التاج والإكليل لمختصر خليل)


    “Al Mazari said: “Songs with no instruments is detested according to us.” Ibn Abd Al Hakm has said: “Whoever becomes habitual on music his testimony would be rejected.” It is as if he deemed this to be a sign of a person lacking any morals. In Al Mudawwanah it is mentioned that the testimony of a male and female singer and mourner would be rejected if they are known for these acts -the condition is that they must be known for carrying out these acts- Being known of these actions denotes upon the lowliness of a person.” (At Taj al ikleel)


    يعني أن الإجارة على تعليم الغناء لا تجوز ومثله آلات الطرب كالعود والمزمار ؛ لخبر{ أن الله إذا حرم شيئا حرم ثمنه } (شرح مختصر خليل للخرشي)


    “Taking a wage for teaching the method of singing or (teaching) the use of musical instruments is not permissible….because of the narration “Verily when Allah forbids a thing he forbid earning through it.” (Kharshi’s Sharh on Mukhtasar Kaleel)


    ( ولا ) يحل لك أيضا سماع ( الغناء ) بكسر الغين والمد وهو الصوت المتقطع الذي فيه ترنم لتحريك القلب والمحرم سماعه ما كان بآلة وممن يلتذ بصوته وإلا كان مكروها . (الفواكه الدواني على رسالة ابن أبي زيد القيرواني)


    “And it is also not permissible for you to listen to music…it is forbidden to listen if there are musical instruments or from such an individual from whose voice pleasure is derived, otherwise it is makrooh.” (Al Fawaakih ad dawani)


    ( و ) كره ( الزمارة والبوق ) المسمى عندنا بالنفير إذا لم يكثر جدا حتى يلهي كل اللهو (حاشية الصاوي على الشرح الصغير)


    “And a clarinet and horn is detested….if a person does not persist until it diverts him completely. [Otherwise it will be haram.]” (Hashiyyah As Sawi)


    يحرم سماع الغناء (حاشية الصاوي على الشرح الصغير)


    “And it is haraam to listen to music.” (Hashiyyah As Sawi)


    وكره مالك بيع الجارية المغنية وقال الغناء عيب يجب أن يبين به (الكافي في فقه أهل المدينة)


    “Imam Malik detested selling a singing girl and he said: “Singing is a defect and it is compulsory that the seller informs the customer about it.” (Al Kafi fi fiqh ahl al Madinah)


    أما الغناء واللهو كله فحرام تعليمه بأجرة وبغير أجرة


    “It is forbidden to teach singing and futile things for a wage and for no wage.” (Al Kafi fi fiqh ahl al Madinah)


    وأما الغناء بآلة فإن كانت ذات أوتار كالعود والطنبور فممنوع وكذلك المزمار والظاهر عند بعض العلماء أن ذلك يلحق بالمحرمات (مواهب الجليل في شرح مختصر الشيخ خليل)


    “To sing with an instrument which has strings like a lute and mandolin is forbidden. The same would be the ruling of the horn; it is apparent according to some Ulama that it will be in the category of haram actions.” (Mawaahib al Jaleel)


    كان مالك يكره الدفاف والمعازف كلها في العرس وذلك أني سألته عنه فضعفه ولم يعجبه ذلك (المدونة)


    “Imam Malik detested all drums and horns at the time of marriage. The proof of this is I asked him and he weakened (the opinion of those who say it is permissible) and it never interested him.” (Al Mudawwanah)
  

        SHAFI MADHAB


    فقد قال الشافعي رضي الله عنه في الرجل يغني فيتخذ الغناء صناعته يؤتى عليه ، ويأتي له ، ويكون منسوبا إليه ، مشهورا به ، معروفا أو المرأة : فلا تجوز شهادة واحد منهما ، وذلك أنه من اللهو المكروه الذي يشبه الباطل ، وأن من صنع هذا كان منسوبا إلى السفه وسقاطة المروءة (السنن الصغرى للبيهقي)


    “Imam Shafi mentions that a male who takes singing as a profession; (at times) people call him and (at times) people come to him, people attribute singing to him and he has become famous and known for it, or any female who sings, their testimony will not be accepted. The reason for this is that singing is an abominable and futile action and resembles things which are useless. The person who sings is usually deemed as stupid without any morals and ethics. (As Sunan as sughra)


    القسم الثاني أن يغني ببعض آلات الغناء مما هو من شعار شاربي الخمر وهو مطرب كالطنبور والعود والصنج وسائر المعازف والأوتار يحرم استعماله واستماعه. (روضة الطالبين وعمدة المفتين)


    “The second is to sing with some delightful instruments of music, which is the sign of those who drink wine, like the lute and tamboline and all types of other musical instruments. (These) are totally forbidden to use and hear.” (Raudha At Taalibeen)


    قلت الأصح أو الصحيح تحريم اليراع وهو هذه الزمارة التي يقال لها الشبابة وقد صنف الإمام أبو القاسم الدولعي كتاباً في تحريم اليراع مشتملا على نفائس وأطنب في دلائل تحريمه والله أعلم. (روضة الطالبين وعمدة المفتين)


    “The more correct view is that a reed is also haraam….. Imam Abu Qasim has written a treatise in which there are a lot of valuable (points and proofs). He went into much detail proofing that a reed is not permissible.” (Raudha At Taalibeen)


    ويكره الغناء بلا آلة، وسماعه.ويحرم استعمال آلة من شعار الشربة كطنبور وعود وصنج ومزمار عراقي و استماعها، لا يراع في الأصح. قلت: الأصح تحريمه، والله أعلم. (المنهاج للنووي)


    “Singing and listening to songs is detested if there are no instruments. It is forbidden to use and hear instruments which are from the signs of those who consume wine, like a mandolin, lute and Iraqi flutes not a reed according to the correct view.” Thereafter Imam Nawawi ruled: “The most correct view is that it is (also) not permissible. And Allah knows best” (Al Minhaaj)


    (فصل) ويحرم استعمال الآلات التى تطرب من غير غناء كالعود والطنبور والمعزفة والطبل والمزمار، والدليل عليه قوله تعالى (ومن الناس من يشترى لهو الحديث ليضل عن سبيل الله) قال ابن عباس انها الملاهي. وروى عبد الله ابن عمرو بن العاص أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال (إن الله حرم على أمتى الخمر والميسر والمزمار والكوبة والقنين) وروى عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال (تمسخ أمة من أمتى بشربهم الخمر وضربهم بالكوبة والمعازف) ولانها تطرب وتدعو إلى الصد عن ذكر الله تعالى وعن الصلاة والى اتلاف المال فحرم كالخمر ، (المجموع)


    “It is not permissible to use instruments which bring pleasure with no singing like the mandolin, lute, drum and horn. The proof of this is the verse (And there are some people who purchase ‘lahw al hadith’ (music) to lead others astray from the Allah…)). (Luqmân: 6) Ibn Abbaas (radhiallahu anhu) suggested that it refers to amusements (music and singing). It is also narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin Al Aas that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Verily Allah has prohibited my Ummah from wine, gambling, the flute, drums and singing slaves.” It is also narrated that the prophet of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “A group of my Ummah will be tranformed because of drinking wine, beating the drum and musical insruments.” Music also gives one enjoyment and distracts him from the rememberance of Allah and Salah. Furthermore, it leads one to waste money which is forbidden like wine.” (Al Majmoo)


    ( ويكره الغناء ) بكسر أوله وبالمد ( بلا آلة وسماعه ) (نهاية المحتاج إلى شرح المنهاج)


    “Singing and listening to the songs is detested if there are no instruments.” (Nihayah)


    ( ويكره الغناء ) بكسر أوله وبالمد ( بلا آلة وسماعه ) يعني استماعه لا مجرد سماعه بلا قصد لما صح عن ابن مسعود ومثله لا يقال من قبل الرأي فيكون في حكم المرفوع أنه ينبت النفاق في القلب كما ينبت الماء البقل وجاء مرفوعا من طرق كثيرة بينتها في كتابي كف الرعاع عن محرمات اللهو والسماع (تحفة المحتاج في شرح المنهاج)


    “It is despicable to sing or listen to a song which has no instrument; not merely hearing it unintentionally. It is authentically proven from Ibn Masood (radhiallahu anhu) - and such an opinion cannot be formed by ones own opinion, therefore it is inevitably on the status of being directly from Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) – that music causes hypocracy to grow in the heart like how water causes vegetations to grow.


    والغناء والضرب بالدفوف ونحو هذا من أقبح المنكرات. (الأمر بالاتباع والنهي عن الابتداع للسيوطي )


    “Singing and beating duffs is from amongst the most despicable and detestable actions.” (Al Amr bi Al Itibaa)


    لان الغناء يكره للرجل استماعه وإن أمن الفتنة، (إعانة الطالبين)


    “…Because it is prohibited to listen to music even if one feels save from fitnah.” (I’aanah at taalibeen)


    وفي تجريد المزجد إطلاق الغزالي وابن الصباغ والشيخ أبي إسحاق منع الاستئجار للغناء تعليلا بأنه حرام ممنوع (حواشي الشرواني)


    “In ‘Tajreed al muzajjad’ it is stated from Imam Ghazali, Ibn As Sabbaagh and As Shaykh Abi Ishaaq that a person will be forbidded to hire it out reasoning that music is prohibited and impermissible.” (Hawaashi As Shirwani)


    ( فرع الغناء ) بكسر الغين والمد ( وسماعه ) يعني استماعه ( بلا آلة ) أي كل منهما ( مكروه ) لما فيه من اللهو لقوله تعالى { ومن الناس من يشتري لهو الحديث } قال ابن مسعود هو الغناء رواه الحاكم وصحح إسناده (أسنى المطالب)


    “It is abominant to listen to music irrespective of whether there is instruments or not because of it being a ‘lahw’ as proven from the following verse “And there are some people who purchase ‘lahw al hadith’ (music)” Ibn Masood (radhiallahu anhu) stated that this verse refers to music. Narrated by Al Hakim who authenticated the chain of narration.” (Asni al Mutalib)


    وأما الغناء على الآلة المطربة كالطنبور والعود وسائر المعازف ) أي الملاهي ( والأوتار ) وما يضرب به ( والمزمار ) العراقي وهو الذي يضرب به مع الأوتار ( وكذا اليراع ) وهو الشبابة ( فحرام ) استعماله واستماعه (أسنى المطالب)


    “Singing with instrument like lutes, mandolines, sticks, flute and all other musical instruments is forbidden. The same would be the ruling of reed i.e. it would also be haraam to use and listen to it.” (Asni al Mutalib)


    قوله الغناء وسماعه بلا آلة مكروه ) وإن لم يتخذه صناعة والقياس في الغناء المضموم للآلة المحرمة بقاء الكراهة في الغناء ولا يخفى تحريمه حيث كان السماع من امرأة أجنبية أو أمرد وخشي الفتنة فيهما (أسنى المطالب)


    “(His statement: “Singing and listening to songs without an instruments is abominable”) even if a person does not take it as an occupation. Analogy would suggest that if the singing is done with instruments it should remain as merely abominable; however, it is not hidden that it would be totally forbidden when a woman or young boy sings or a person fears fitnah.”


    لأن الغناء يكره للرجال استماعه حيث لم تخش الفتنة وإلا حرم (حاشية البجيرمي على المنهج)


    “Because it is abominable for men to listen to music if they don’t fear fitnah, and if they do fear fitnah it will be impermissible.” (Bujairmies Hashiyyah on Al Manhaj)


    HAMBALI MADHAB


    (مسألة) (وان كسر مزمارا أو طنبورا أو صليبا لم يضمنه) (الشرح الكبير لابن قدامة)


    “If a person breaks a flute, mandoline or cross he will not be responsible (to pay back).” (As Sharh al Kabeer)


    فصل : وإن كسر صليبا ، أو مزمارا ، أو طنبورا ، أو صنما ، لم يضمنه . (المغني)


    “If a person breaks a cross, flute, mandoline or idol he would not be responsible for it.” (Al Mughni)


    وذكر في «الشفا» الإجماع على كفر من استحله وفي «المستوعب» و «الترغيب» وغيرهما يحرم مع آلة بلا خلاف بيننا. (المبدع شرح المقنع )


    “It is mentioned in As shifa that there is consensus on the the disbelief of a person who regards it as permissible. In Al Mustoab and At Targheeb etc it is mentioned that music with instruments is forbidden with no difference between us (Hambalies).”(Al Mubda sharh Al Muqna)


    وحاصله أنه يحرم استماع صوت كل ملهاة مع غناء وغيره في سرور وغيره وكره أحمد الطبل قاله في «الرعاية» لغير حرب. الثانية الضرب بالقضيب مكروه إذا انضم اليه تصفيق ورقص وإن خلا عن ذلك لم يكره لأنه ليس بآلة لهو ولا يطرب ولا يسمع منفردا.(المبدع شرح المقنع )


    “In short, it is forbidden to listen to anything which distracts ones awareness irrespective if there is singing or not. Imam Ahmad detested the drum. In Ar Riaayah it is mentioned that this is (if the drum is beaten in times) besides war. Secondly, beating with reeds is abominable if there is clapping and dancing accompanied with the beating. But if it is free from the two things mentioned, it (the beating of reeds) will not be abominable because it is now not an instrument of futility, neither is there any pleasure derived from it nor do people listen to it alone.” (Al Mubda sharh Al Muqna)


    مسألة : وإن كسر مزمارا أو طنبورا أو صليبا لم يضمنه (الشرح الكبير)


    “If a person breaks a flute or a mandoline or a cross he will not be responsible for it.” (As Sharh al Kabeer)


    فصل في الملاهي

    وهي على ثلاثة أضرب : محرم وهو ضرب الأوتار والنايات والمزامير كلها والعود والطنبور والمعزفة والرباب ونحوها فمن أدام استماعها ردت شهادته (الشرح الكبير)


    “Futility is of three types...The first is haram. This includes using strings, ivory and all types of musical instruments. Whoever persists on it his testimony will be rejected.” (As Sharh al Kabeer)


    فصل

    قال أحمد رضي الله عنه : لا يعجبني الغناء لأنه ينبت النفاق في القلب (الكافي في فقه ابن حنبل)


    “Imam Ahmad said: “I don’t like music because it causes hypocracy to grow in the heart.” (Al Kafi fi fiqh al Hambali)


    قال في الرعاية : ويكره سماع الغناء والنوح بلا آلة لهو ، ويحرم معها (الإنصاف)


    “It is mentioned in Ar Riaayah: “It is abominable to listen to songs and wailing without any futile instrument. If there is an instrument it will be totally impermissible.” (Al Insaaf)


    ( ويكره الغناء ) بكسر الغين المعجمة والمد ، وهو رفع الصوت بالشعر على وجه مخصوص ، .

    ( و ) يكره ( استماعه ) أي الغناء إلا من أجنبية فيحرم التلذذ به ، وكذا يحرم من آلة لهو من حيث الآلة ، . (شرح منتهى الإرادات)


    “(Songs are impermissible) …A song is to raise the voice in poetry in a specific method (And) it is abominable (to listen to it) meaning to songs except that from a strange female as it is forbidden to take any pleasure thereof, likewise it will be forbidden if there is an instrument no matter what type of instrument it is.” (Sharh muntaha al iraadaat)


    ( و ) أن يصان ( عن رفع الصبيان أصواتهم باللعب وغيره وعن مزامير الشيطان : من الغناء والتصفيق والضرب بالدفوف . (كشاف القناع عن متن الإقناع)


    “And so that children could be saved from raising their voices in play etc and from the horns of the devil: singing, clapping and beating duffs.” (Kasshaf al Qinaa am mat nil iqna)


    ( فلا تصح الإجارة على الزنا ، والزمر ، والغناء ، والنياحة ؛ ) ؛ لأنها غير مباحة ( ولا إجارة كاتب يكتب ذلك ) أي الغناء والنوح وكذا كتابة شعر محرم أو بدعة أو كلام محرم ؛ لأنه انتفاع محرم . . (كشاف القناع عن متن الإقناع)


    “(It is not permissible to hire out on adultery, blowing flutes, singing and mourning) because it is not permissible (nor can he hire out a scribe to record it) meaning to record songs and words of mourning and likewise impermissible poetry or innovations or forbidden speech, because it is taking benefit from haram...” (Kasshaf al Qinaa am mat nil iqna)


    ( وتصح ) الإعارة ( في ) ذي ( المنافع المباحة ) دون المحرمة كالزمر والطبل والغناء (كشاف القناع عن متن الإقناع )


    “(And) borrowing (is permissible) in (items which are permissible) not things which are impermissible like a flute, drum and songs.” (Kasshaf al Qinaa am mat nil iqna)


    ويكره سماع الغناء ) بكسر الغين والمد ( والنوح بلا آلة لهو ) من عود وطنبور ونحوهما ( ويحرم معها ) أي مع آلة اللهو سماع الغناء (كشاف القناع عن متن الإقناع)


    “(It is abominable to listen to songs)… (And mourning with no instruments) whether it’s a mandoline or lute etc (and it is forbidden with it) meaning with instruments to listen to songs.” (Kasshaf al Qinaa am mat nil iqna)


    وكره الغناء بلا آلة غناء ) من عود وطنبور ونحوهما ( واختارا الأكثر ) ؛ أي : أكثر الأصحاب أنه يحرم الغناء ، سواء كان مع آلة لهو أو لا ( بل ادعى القاضي عياض الإجماع على كفر مستحله ، وفيه نظر ) إذ المذهب كراهته بلا آلة لهو ، ومعها حرام من حيث الآلة .(مطالب أولي النهى في شرح غاية المنتهى)


    “(Singing with no instrument is abominable) whether it is a flute or mandoline etc (Majority are of the opinion) majority are of the opinion that singing is totally forbidden, whether there is instruments or the singing is void of any instruments (Infact Qazi Ayaaz stated that there is consensus on the disbelief of the person who regrds music as permissible, however this is open for debate) because the madhab is that music is abominable if there there are no instruments and forbidden if there are instruments. This impermissibility is because of the instruments.” (Mutalib Uli an nuha)


    فصل : القسم الثاني ، ما منفعته محرمة ، كالزنى والزمر والنوح والغناء ، فلا يجوز الاستئجار لفعله .وبه قال مالك ، والشافعي ، وأبو حنيفة ، وصاحباه ، وأبو ثور .وكره ذلك الشعبي ، والنخعي ؛ لأنه محرم ، فلم يجز الاستئجار عليه ، كإجارة أمته للزنى . (المغني)


    “The second chapter is regarding those slaves, whose usufructs are forbidden like fornication, ramz, mourning and SINGING. It is not permissible to hire out a person who carries out these actions. This is the opinion of Imam Malik, As Shafi, Abu Hanifah, Abu Yusuf, Muhammad, Abu Thaur etc. Imam Shabi and An Nakhi abhored it because of it being totally forbidden. Therefore, it is not permissible to hire out for it just like hiring out his slave girl for fonication.” (Al Mughni)


    وقال ابن عقيل : الغناء في الأمة عيب . (الإنصاف)


    Ibn Aqeel said: “The ability to sing in a slave girl is a defect.” (Al Insaaf)


    كون النفع مباحا فلا تجوز على المنافع المحرمة ، كالغناء (منار السبيل شرح الدليل)


    “(It is a condition) that the usufruct is permissible, Thus, it would not be permissible on impermissible abilities like singing…” (Minaar as sabeel)


    فلا تصح الإجارة على نفع محرم كالزنا والزمر والغناء (الروض المربع )


    “Hiring is not permissible usufructs like fornication, ramz and singing.” (Ar Raudh al murbi)


    فلا تصح (اي الاجارة) على نفع محرم: كالزنا والزمر والغناء (زاد المستقنع في إختصار المقنع)


    “So hiring out is not permissible on impermissible usufructs like fornication, ramz and singing.” (Zad al mustaqna)


    وعن مزامير الشيطان : الغناء والتصفيق والضرب بالدفوف (الإقناع)


    “…And from the flutes of the devil like singing, clapping and beating the duff.” (Al Iqna)


    ويكره سماع الغناء والنوح بلا آلة لهو ويحرم معها (الإقناع)


    “To listen to singing and mourning without an instrument is abominable, and with an instrument it is totally forbidden.” (Al Iqna)


    وإن شرط الغناء في الجارية لا يصح لأن الغناء مذموم في الشرع فلم يصح اشتراطه كالزنا (الشرح الكبير)


    “If a person puts the condition of the ability to sing on a slave girl it will not be correct, because singing is a despicable act in Shariah therefore it would not be correct just like fornication…” (As Sharh al Kabeer)


    ولا يجوز عقد الإجارة على المنافع المحرمة كالغناء (الكافي في فقه ابن حنبل)


    “It is not permissible to take rent on impermissible actions like singing…:” (Al Kafi fi fiqh Ibn Hambal)


    و يكره استماعه أي الغناء إلا من أجنبية فيحرم التلذذ به وكذا يحرم من آلة لهومن حيث الآلة(شرح منتهى الإرادات)


    “It is abominable to listen to it, meaning songs except from a strange girl in which case it will be totally forbidden to enjoy. Likewise, it will be totally forbidden if there are instruments irrespective of what type of instruments there are.”(Sharh muntaha al iraadaat)


    فلا تصح الإجارة على الزنا والغناء والنياحة (كشف المخدرات والرياض الزاهرات لشرح أخصر المختصرات)


    “It is not permissible to hire out on zina, singing and mourning.”(Kasf al mukhaddarat)


    VERDICTS OF ULAMA OF THE GHAIR MUQILLIDEEN


    فالغناء رقية الزنا وهو من أعظم الأسباب لوقوع الفواحش (مجموع فتاوى ابن تيمية)


    “Singing is a means to zina, and it is from the greatest catylysts which leads to immoral actions.” (Majmoo fatawa Ibn Taymiyyah)


    والأوتار يحرم استعماله واستماعه (إغاثة اللهفان من مصائد الشيطان)


    “It is forbidden to use (musical instruments) and to hear it. (Ighatha al lahfaan, This entire treatise is written to show the impermissibility of music)

    قال رحمه الله: (والزمر). الزمر النفخ في المزامير، والغناء: يكون بآلات اللهو، وبالنسبة للزمر والغناء فقد حرمهما الله عز وجل؛ ولذلك توعد الله عز وجل أهله فقال: ومن الناس من يشتري لهو الحديث ليضل عن سبيل الله بغير علم ويتخذها هزوا أولئك لهم عذاب مهين [لقمان:6] وهذه الآية الكريمة كان عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه يحلف بالله الذي لا إله إلا هو أنه الغناء. وعبد الله بن مسعود قد تلقى القرآن من فم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم غضا طريا كما نزل، وما كان يقرأ عشر آيات حتى يتعلمهن ويعلم حلالهن وحرامهن، وكان أعلم بكتاب الله عز وجل، وكان رضي الله عنه يقول: (ما من آية إلا وأعلم أين نزلت، ومتى نزلت، وفيم نزلت، ولو أعلم رجلا أعلم بكتاب الله مني تعمل إليه المطي لذهبت إليه). وهذا يدل على عظيم مكانته وجليل منزلته رضي الله عنه وأرضاه في ضبط كتاب الله ومعرفة ما فيه، وقد أجمع العلماء رحمهم الله على أن ابن مسعود رضي الله عنه من أئمة الصحابة الذين هم أهل لتسطير كتاب الله عز وجل، و له تفسيراته المشهورة، فعبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه وأرضاه فسر هذه الآية، وحلف بالله اليمين المغلظة وقال: (والله الذي لا إله إلا هو، إنه الغناء).     Shaykh Shanqeeti mentions “Blowing in a horn or playing with musical instruments has been prohibited by Allah. It is for this reason that Allah has severly warned those who indulge in it, as in the following verse ((And there are some people who purchase ‘lahw al hadith’ (music) to lead others astray from the Allah and and they ridicule it. For them there is a humiliating punishment)). (Luqmân: 6) Ibn Masood (radhiallahu anhu) used to take an oath and say that this verse refers to music. Abdullah Ibn Masood (radhiallahu anhu) received the Quran directly from Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) as it was revealed. It was his habit that he never read more than ten verses until he learnt them and fully understood what was permissible and what was forbidden. He was the most knowledgeable of the Quran and he himself used to say: “There is no verse in the Quran except that I know where it was revealed, when it was revealed and the reason of its revelation. If I know any person who knows more than me and it is possible for me to reach him, I will undertake a special journey to him even if it is so far that I will require camels to reach him.” This clearly shows his lofty stature and high position in understanding the Quran, may Allah be pleased with him. There is consensus amongst the Scholars that Abdullah bin Masood was from the formost companions who were deserving of recording the book of Allah. He has famous commentaries. (A person of this caliber), Abdullah bin Masood commentated on this verse and took a firm oath and said ‘By the oath of that diety besides whom there are no other are deities, verily it is music’. (Sharh zaad al mustaqna)


    الغناء بالمعازف محرم (شرح زاد المستقنع للشنقيطي)


    Shaykh Shanqeeti has ruled “Singing with musical instruments is totally forbidden.”(Sharh zaad al mustaqna)

    و لذلك اتفقت المذاهب الأربعة على تحريم آلات الطرب كلها ، (السلسلة الصحيحة للالباني)


    Albani has said, “Thus, all four madhabs are in conformity on the prohibition of all types of musical instruments.” (As Silsilah As saheehah) [Albani wrote an entire treatise ‘Tahreem aalaat at tarb’ where he stresses on the impermissibility of music.]


    أما التليفزيون، فيحرم ما فيه من غناء وموسيقى وتصوير وعرض صور ونحو ذلك من المنكرات. ( فتاوى اللجنة الدائمة للبحوث العلمية والإفتاء)


    “As for a television, it is prohibited because of the songs, music, pictures etc on it.”[Verdict signed by Abdullah bin Quood, Abdullah bin Ghadyaan, Abdur Razzaaq Al Afeefy and Abdul Azeez bin Abdullah bin Baaz] (Fataawaa al lujna ad daimah lil buhooth al ilmiyyah wal ifta)


    إن الاستماع إلى الأغاني حرام ومنكر ، ومن أسباب مرض القلوب وقسوتها وصدها عن ذكر الله وعن الصلاة . (مجموع فتاوى و مقالات ابن باز)


    Shaykh Bin Baaz has said: “Verily listening to songs is totally forbidden and loathsome. It is one of the reasons of the sicknesses and hardness of the heart and it takes a person away from the rememberance of Allah and prayers.” (Majmoo fataawaa wa maqaalaat Ibn Baaz)


    وإن لم يصحب الغناء آلة اللهو فهو حرام عند أكثر العلماء وقد علم بالأدلة المتكاثرة أن سماع الأغاني والعكوف عليها ولا سيما بآلات اللهو كالعود والموسيقى ونحوهما من أعظم مكايد الشيطان ومصائده التي صاد بها قلوب الجاهلين وصدهم بها عن سماع القرآن الكريم وحبب إليهم العكوف على الفسوق والعصيان ، والغناء هو قرآن الشيطان ومزماره ورقية الزنا واللواط والجالب لأنواع الشر والفساد .     At another place, Shaykh Bin Baaz said: “Even if the singing is done without any instruments then too it is forbidden according to the vast majority of Scholars. It is known through numerous proofs that indulgently listening to songs with musical instruments is one of the biggest ploys and traps of the devil that he uses to ensnare the hearts of those who are ignorant and turn them away from listening to the Quran. He adorns for them the spending of time in sin and transgression. Singing is the Quran and flute of the devil, it is a road to fornication and homosexuality and a means of drawing all types of evil and wickedness.” (Majmoo fataawaa wa maqaalaat Ibn Baaz)


    فقد نقل الإجماع على حرمة الاستماع إلى الموسيقى والمعازف جمع من العلماء منهم: الإمام القرطبي وابن الصلاح وابن رجب الحنبلي وغيرهم، ...كما أن الغناء المصاحب لآلات الموسيقى هو من المحرمات، ...وإذا تقررت حرمة الموسيقى والاستماع إلى الغناء المصاحب لها، فليعلم السائل أن الله تعالى لما حرم ذلك لم يفرق بين صوت آلة وأخرى ولا بين غناء وآخر، وإنما شمل الحكم الجميع بالتحريم، سواء كان المستمع يفهم أصوات الأدوات المستخدمة ويطرب لذلك أولا.ومن الحكم التي ذكرها العلماء للتحريم: أن الغناء ينبت النفاق في القلب كما ينبت الماء البقل، وأنه بريد الفاحشة، وأنه شعار أهل الخمر والفسوق والعصيان.والله أعلم.

    On being asked the ruling of singing and music, The ‘Markaz al fataawa’ (which is overseen by Shaykh Abdullah Al Faqeeh) replied: “A great number of Scholars have remarked that there is ijma on the prohibition of music and its instruments. Some of these Scholars are…Imam Al Qurtubi, Ibn As Salaah, Ibn Rajab Al Hambali etc…just as how singing with musical instruments is forbidden…Now since the prohibition of music has been established, the questioner should know that there is no difference between the various musical instruments nor between the various types of songs. The ruling of prohibition applies to all irrespective of whether the listener understands and enjoys the music or not. The Ulama also mention the following reasons why music is forbidden: it causes hypocrisy to grow in the heart as water causes plants to grow, it increases ones lust and it is a sign of the drinkers,transgressers and sinful.” (Fataawaa ash shubka al Islamiyyah)


    ويجتنب المعازف وهي آلات اللهو بجميع أنواعها كالعود والربابة والقانون والكمنجة والبيانو والكمان وغيرها فإن هذه حرام. وتزداد تحريما وإثما إذا اقترنت بالغناء بأصوات جميلة وأغان مثيرة (مجموع فتاوى العثيمين)


    Shaykh Uthaimeen has said: “(A (person) should refrain from musical instruments which include amongst others a lute, a rebec (musical instrument in Arab lands which resembles the fiddle with one, two or three strings), the zither (a musical instruments with strings), the violent, the piano, the bow etc, all these are totally forbidden. It becomes even more impermissible and there is more sin if these are accompanied with songs that are done with beautiful and seductive voices” (Majmoo fatawa al Uthaymeen)


    يحرم الغناء إذا كانت مادته محرمة أو أداؤه مثيرا، وإذا ألهى عن الواجب فهو حرام. والله أعلم. (فتاوى قطاع الإفتاء بالكويت)


    The Ulama of Kuwait passed the following verdict: “Singing is prohibited if the contents are forbidden or singing it raises one; and if it takes you away from a compulsory act then too it will be forbidden.” (Fataawaa Qutta al Iftaa bil Kuwait)


    Moulana Zafr Ahmad Thanwi has ruled that music is totally forbidden. (Imdaad al Ahkaam 4/375-376 Maktabah Dar al uloom Deoband)


    After quoting the text of Radd al muhtaar which explains the impermissibility of music, Mufti Shafi remarked: “The above text shows that singing and listening to songs is totally forbidden and an act of sin and transgression…”(Imdaad al Mufteen 2/832 Dar al isha’at)


    Mufti Rasheed Ludhwani has written: “The impermissibility of music is so clear that there is totally no reason to mention proofs of its prohibition…” (Ahsan al fatawa 8/379 H M Saeed) Mufti saheb has written an entire treatise ‘Al Masabeeh al gharra lil wiqayah an adgaab al ghina’ to proof the impermissibility of music.


    Moulana Yusuf Ludhwani has said: “Allah Ta’ala has made music haraam...” (Aap ke masaail aur unka hal 7/338 Maktabah Ludhwani


    CONCLUSION


    (1) The impermissibility of music has been established from Quran and Ahadith.

    (2) This is the verdict given by the most senior Scholars of all four madhabs. The Scholars of those who don’t follow a madhab have given the same ruling. Thus, it has become the official ruling of the vast majority of the Ummah.

    (3) In addition to the numerous spiritual harms, music is also dangerous for ones psychology, health and worldly life.

    (4) Due to the great amount of Ulama who passed the verdict of disbelief on a person who regards music as permissible, many senior Ulama thought there was total consensus on this issue.

    (5) To adopt singing as ones profession or means of income e.g selling music cassettes etc is totally forbidden

    (6) Many Scholars prohibit the duff even for nikah. Those who say it is permissible confine it to the duff which was prevalent in the time of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) (simple with no additional bells etc). Furthermore, it is only to inform others of the nikah, and not as an entertainment.
